I need serious help - baby due in one week and neighbour has just used our name for their baby!!!

I really don't know what to do, we had chosen the name finn for our son who is going to be born next friday (planned section). only my neighbour went into labour early, had a boy and has called him finlay. I know its not exactly the same name, but it may as well be. My son and him will be in the same class at school, and are likely to hang around together as they get older - we live in a small cul-de-sac. I really don't want my son known as finn 2, so am trying to find another name fast - can anyone suggest anything - PLEASE!!!

Quinlan? Quinley? Either with the nn Quinn?
Did the neighbour know your choice was Finn? Who chose first?

Unless you choose an unusual or unpopular name it's unlikely that your ds will never be in the same class, street, or club as another lad with the same name as him.

do you reckon we could use the same name? she doesn't know we have chosen it - we kept the name quiet (as everyone knows the date and the gender - wanted something to announce on the day!). I just feel uncomfortable, like we would have copied her. You are probably right, they could move, i just wish i felt more comfortable with it

I suppose it depends how close they will be. If you are good friends with your neighbour and your children will be close, then I agree with you.

I say you should stick with your plan and call your baby Finn. It's a great name, plus you thought of it first!

We had similar - when I was about 6 months pregnant we had decided on a boy's name and then I met my neighbour who had just had a boy... same name. As it was I had a girl but they are in the same class at school and we did spend a lot of time together when they were pre-school so I don't think I would have liked it.

Of your choices I probably like Jude best. I would avoid Cameron at the moment (unless you want to commemorate the general election of 2010 )

oh what an utter PITA and unfortunate luck/timing all round! although it is possible she has had her heart set on Finlay since she was 6 or something ridiclious like that! did she mention the name at any point before now?

its very popular name up here in Scotland along with Lewis/Callum and Cameron

and I'm NOT one for the whole babyname ownership HOWEVER think of it this way, had you gone ahead and had DS first and the following week she had her DS and called him Finlay how would you feel? use that as your basis for your decision and see how you go from there

I agree - stick to your original name. Finn is a lovely name. If you had a nephew with the same name it might not be a good idea, but a neighbour?

My daughter is in nursery with a boy called Sawyer. I love that name... even though I'm sure the inspiration came from Lost ;-)

Jude or Niall are both fantastic. I don't like any of the others at all.

Same happened to me with DS2. 2 weeks before he was born, a good friend of mine whose older DC played with my DS1 had a boy and called him the same name DH and I were going to use. We had no idea our name cjhoices would be identical!DH and I had to quickly think of an alternative because our DCs would be spending so much time together but if it was a neighbour rather than an actual friend/close family member, I think I would go ahead anyway as you have got different surnames (I presume?) and might not always live nearby.
I sympathise, though, it's really frustrating when you have spent ages trying to find a name you and DH agree on only for someone to use it just before your DC is born!

Finn is very popular. It's not unbelievable that this has happened. pick another name that is less usual.

Saul is more my cup of tea than Sawyer. What about Saul? Snappy one syllable name like Finn.

I read something like this when I was pg and worried about it till I read one of the responses.

Go and speak to your neighbour congratulate her, maybe take a small gift for her wee boy,then work into the converstion that you had chosen this name for your DS and that you still plan on using it when he comes. You then leave the choice with her - maybe she will change her mind and solve the problem for you.

Might seem a little sneaky but as others have said you may not live next door to them forever.

Niall is great (if pronounced like kneel, not nile!)
