I really don't know what to do, we had chosen the name finn for our son who is going to be born next friday (planned section). only my neighbour went into labour early, had a boy and has called him finlay. I know its not exactly the same name, but it may as well be. My son and him will be in the same class at school, and are likely to hang around together as they get older - we live in a small cul-de-sac. I really don't want my son known as finn 2, so am trying to find another name fast - can anyone suggest anything - PLEASE!!!

I love Neil as a name (or Niall pronounced Neel but may cause confusion) - much less popular now than Finn as well, so he would definitely be the only one in his class if that is important to you. Also like Jude and Nate, but only if short for Nathaniel, which is one of my top choice names.

Personally, if this situation happened to me I would probably choose another name - but it would depend how much I absolutely loved the name I had chosen and whether I could be happy with an alternative. Tricky!

rusmum · 22/04/2010 07:12

what about Fenn?

dilbertina · 22/04/2010 08:24

dd had a Fion in her class last year or maybe it was Fionn.... similiar but different enough?

wickedfairy · 22/04/2010 08:30

I know a Finlay whose nickname is Finn - similar names, although not exactly the same obviously.

btw, as a few people have already pointed out, Niall is pronounced Neil in Scotland, differently in Ireland. I know a few from both countries and it is like said above....

StepSideways · 22/04/2010 08:50

Reece (not sure if thats the right spelling...)

JumeirahJane · 22/04/2010 09:07

Keep your chosen name, otherwise you may end up regretting changing it, and possibly silently resenting your neighbour. Unless you are related, it is not an issue.

When you were at school, how many doubling or trebling-up of names can you remember? We had 2 Karens, 4 Vickis, 3 Emmas all in the same class (most in the same street). It didn't and doesn't matter.

I repeat, keep your chosen name, it is lovely!

All the best for the birth

Bucharest · 22/04/2010 10:02

I think she's done you a favour.

Clarissimo · 22/04/2010 10:09

Step it isn one, Rhys is the other

A few Finn's in ds's calsses, not a rare name at all so you could well keep it

OTOH we vetoes Elliot when sister had Ellis 2 months before due date so I can understand

Cameron- as someone said, I wouldn't in an election year! Ditto Gordon and Nick in the interest of equality )

I ahev Samuel Stirling Harry and Sebastian.

Flynn seems the obvious choice IMO, but you can always give him Finn as a middle name and call him that as a nickname / home name if you want.

Clarissimo · 22/04/2010 10:11

(BTW in my class of 13 girls for PE 8 had my name. yes I played with the spelling (as only one who ever did any homework properly I wanted it back!) but it was not a problem)

And there is always as others said Finaly, Finegan, etc. They choose to sue whole name often in school anyway IME.

cumbria81 · 22/04/2010 14:57

nate is not a name. It's short for Nathan.

itsybitsy08 · 22/04/2010 15:21

A name is a name if someone is called it!
I would personally stick with the original name, which is v nice btw.
If you really want to pick another name i love love love nate and have done for years. If i ever have a DS that is what i would choose! Love it!
You obv have very good taste!

pagwatch · 22/04/2010 15:26

It is divine intervention. Chose something else

RiverOfSleep · 22/04/2010 15:27

Stick with the name you love. DS has the same name as the boy next door and they are in the same class at school. Its not a problem at all. In fact I think they quite like it!

vickyob · 24/04/2010 18:38

Love nate but Id use Finn if you had decided on it. You nevery know when he arrives it might not have suited him - happened to me with DS Harry all the way through pregnancy now a Samuel as Harry is just not him.

janeite · 24/04/2010 18:45

I like Jude, Cameron and Dean better than Finn, if that's any help. Love Jude.

littlemiss26 · 24/04/2010 19:50

thanks guys for all your advice - we've decided to see what he's like when he's here, but he will either be Finn Joseph as originally planned, or Nate Alistair. I'm more and more coming round to him being Nate now, and i agree with Vickyob - first baby was matthew all the way through pregnancy, but decided on Elliot at the end, so i guess it just takes some time to adjust! well, he's going to be born on friday, so i'll pop back on and let you know what we went for!!

vicbar · 25/04/2010 18:02

Imo i agree with vickyob (ive name changed) is not said enough .
Good luck for friday, both names are lovely.

WantageWife · 25/04/2010 20:12

Sebastian / Seb
Kieron
Phenton / Fenton
Malachi / Max
Frank / Frankie
Kai
Kade
Frederic / Freddie

My favourite name for a boy was Jude, but then I had a girl. My friend has since pinched it... most annoying. Thankfully I'm pregnant with another girl, so I wont have to worry about finding another boys name! My favourites are above though.

tillywee · 03/05/2010 20:20

Charlotte church piched my boy name! she had Dexter a little while before I had my baby, didn't know the sex and was well pissed off.

Thank god I had a girl in the end

tigersmummy · 04/05/2010 21:06

How awkward! But like many here I would go with your first choice, otherwise you may regret it. Unless when you meet him he's definitely not a Finn? I love the name Flynn too, that may be a good alternative? Also love Jude and Nate.
I would mention in passing to your neighbour that you had Finn in mind but don't be put off your name, the boys might not even like each other and your neighbour may move in time!

LadyGardenia · 04/05/2010 21:11

There is Fionn which can be pronounced Finn but has also a pronunciation Fyunn (which I like) you could do that if you still feel awkward when the time comes (sorry I do see you have only 1 week) - but really nobody has copyright over a name!

Trafficcone · 04/05/2010 21:12

My Finns best mate is called Finlay. He lives in the next street. shrugs

RubiMama · 04/05/2010 21:54

What about Kit? It's one syllable and has the 'i' sound like Finn. Elliot and Kit sound great together.

giddywithglee · 05/05/2010 09:24

My husband's a primary school teacher and they get loads of kids in the same class with the same name. Apparently he had 5 Jessicas in a class of 28 last year.

And when my niece went to nursery she just happened to become best friends with someone who has the same name as her!

Unless the neighbour is a good friend of yours I really wouldn't worry about it.

GuntherMcKilocodie · 05/05/2010 14:24

Jude and Saul are really nice
