I really don't know what to do, we had chosen the name finn for our son who is going to be born next friday (planned section). only my neighbour went into labour early, had a boy and has called him finlay. I know its not exactly the same name, but it may as well be. My son and him will be in the same class at school, and are likely to hang around together as they get older - we live in a small cul-de-sac. I really don't want my son known as finn 2, so am trying to find another name fast - can anyone suggest anything - PLEASE!!!

From your list I would choose Niall (but with the spelling Neil), or Nate if it is short for Nathaniel.

SoupDragon · 21/04/2010 18:42

Stick with Finn. He will be Finn and Finlay will have to be Finaly.

Freezingmyarseoff · 21/04/2010 18:43

Stick with your chosen name, as others say they might move or you might move.

fabhead · 21/04/2010 18:47

I know loads of Finns and Finlays so they seems like 2 separate names to me. Everyone I know with a Finlay calls them Finlay so I dont see why they cant be Finn and Finlay - or Flynn and Finlay to differentiate a bit.

Saying that, my friend had a Finlay last year and had a massive falling out with a silly old friend they hardly see who had had a Finn earlier in the year .....

doughnutty- what a great idea!

"Hello, congratulations on the birth of your son. It's so funny, that is the name we have chosen for our son when he is born! Great minds think alike, eh!"

But don't get too chummy or you might find she becomes a friend and then you will be friends instead of neighbours with the same named child

Magaly · 21/04/2010 18:50

Niall is pronounced NYul. Not like Neil.

Bit strange to choose the name Neil but use the spelling Niall. That's like saying my name is Penny spelt Polly.

no it's not malagy. I know at least 2 Nialls who are pronounced Neil. it's the gaelic spelling I think. they are both in Scotland though, so maybe that's it?

littlemiss26 · 21/04/2010 18:58

yeah i must admit i've not heard of anyone thinking niall is just neil spelt differently! interesting to know. After long discussion with husband (and two year old son - quite hilarious!) i think we are either going to stick with finn (which i'm not too comfortable about) or go for Nate i think. I'm not sure what we'll do, i've got till next friday to decide!!

I too also know a Scottish Niall pronounced Neil however I keep calling him Nyul

Magaly · 21/04/2010 19:02

Yes but it's a different name. Niall is not pronounced the same way. I know more Nialls than you do I bet,,,, (lucky me...... )

Magaly · 21/04/2010 19:03

Oh hang on. I have to admit that the Irish pronounciation of Niall is different from Neil, but in Scottish Gaelic they could be the same for all I know.

dizzydixies · 21/04/2010 19:04

I know an irish Niall who is Ny-ul and a Scottish Niall who is Neil - all very confusing and unnecessary imo

KiddingAnxiously · 21/04/2010 19:04

Niall is pronounced NYul like Magaly says, there are several in our area and they are all pronounced so (Ireland)

I know a Fintan and his nn is Finn.

KiddingAnxiously · 21/04/2010 19:05

Ok, everyone has moved on and Scottish may be different

dizzydixies · 21/04/2010 19:06

kidding in Scotland it is pn as Neil

Haliborange · 21/04/2010 19:08

Stick with your original choice.
I'd lay money that they won't be the only Finns in their class. And if your boy is noisier presumably he'll be Finn 1??!

kveta · 21/04/2010 19:11

ah, well that may be it then - scottish vs irish!

TheNextMrsDepp · 21/04/2010 19:29

Had a similar case myself; I was expecting around a month after dh's sister-in-law. She had a girl, and named it Megan, which was our top girl choice. As they have the same surname and would be cousins it wiped out any possibility of us using that name (unlike neighbours it's a pretty safe bet you'll be associating with your cousins for many years to come!).

Grrr.

Guess what? I had a boy.

I think you will come into close contact with kids with the same name as you go through life whatever you do - you may choose Nate and then he ends with a best mate at senior school called Nate. The only way to avoid this is to go for something like Aloysius or Elvis (but hey, that's child abuse).

Go with the name you love the most, just explain to your neighbour you didn't copy her.

jellybeans · 21/04/2010 21:04

Finn OK but Finlay far too popular
Jude dislike hugely
Cameron ok
Zane ok
Dean ok
Niall love this
Jared dislike
Nate like

Niall is gorgeous

emts · 22/04/2010 05:22

Stanley?

diddl · 22/04/2010 06:44

I like Niall,
Also Niles.
Saul is fantastic.
Will just throw in Jethro because I love it!

ADuckCalledBill · 22/04/2010 06:58

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 22/04/2010 07:01

I think sticking with Finn is fine but do also like Nate. DD has a Joseph and a Joe in her class and I've always thought of them as two seperate names as the children seem so different I'd feel the same with Finn and Finlay. Do think Flynn is very nice though.
