Do you think Keira is a chav name?

Well me and hubby love the name but my sisters think its chav, my work colleagues think its chav, his friends think itss chav and his brother and sister think its chav. I don't see why people would judge us though because I'm an accountant and he's a doctor so its not like we're chavs ourselves. And because she's due in May we've given her May as a middle name, so thats not chav either. What do you think.

Sorry but it's a yes from me - the saving grace is that you've decided to spell her middle name May not Mae and not to use a hyphen. My policy is that you have to imagine the name as a BBC news reader and see if it fits :-)

You've already decided it's not "chav" so why are you asking?

if you are educated enough to be an accountant and your partner a doctor then I'm sorry but I feel you should be able to choose a name for your child and be confident enough to use it

another classic case of telling people BEFORE baby is born then allowing them to ruin it for you

stop talking about it until she arrives and then hopefully they'll have good enough manners to smile and say 'lovely' and if not get some new nicer friends/collegues/family

As for whether it's 'chav' or not - Keira Knightley isn't all that 'chav', is she?

It doesn't sound as fresh and pretty as it did when Keira Knightly first became known and it is popular in less obviously middle class circles. It is a nice name and if you like it, then defend your choice, but I agree Ciara is nicer IMO.

The trouble with 'K' names is there is a lot of odd spellings of 'C' names e.g Kate-lynn, Kristina, Kaycee, Kandy etc. So a name that could be spelt with a 'C' (Ciara, Cira) looks less classic with a 'K' (Keira, Kira). If you get my drift.

I also don't like names beginning with K (which is odd as my name is Kirsty, and my dd's middle name is Katharine).

I agree that Ciara is a far better name than Keira, for some unfathomable reason.

May is very common as a middle name though. I think it is a slightly absurd choice of name unless you are naming after someone, or you are born in the month of May. Otherwise it is just a filler name isn't it? This century's version of Louise (which I imagine 80% of girls born in the 70s have as a middle name, me included).

Also loathe the use of the word chav.

DD is called Keira.

We're not remotely chav.

We just like the name.

I have a GP friend with a 4 year old daughter, Kiera (spelt ie rather than ei like Keira Knightley). Seems a perfectly reasonable name to me and doesn't smack of "chav" IMHO. I also know of a Ciara but people often mispronounce her name because of the Irish spelling.

You must never tell anybody the names you are intending to call your children because somebody WILL have a neg opinion and feel free to tell you, which when pg hormones are flying, can be unbearable.

Imo most people are polite enough to keep it schtum when presented with beautiful baby and told name.

Don't name your baby by committee. You'll end up with somethin dull.

It's one of those names I would keep an open mind on. The only Keira I've met didn't have chav parents.

I do think giving May as a second part of a hyphenated name is a bit low class, though.

For example, Milly-May, while being a perfectly nice name IMO, would lead me to immediately presume the parents weren't doctors or accountants.

So together, Keira May doesn't sound like the type of name Royalty would bestow apon their child, but if YOU like it, that's what counts...and next time you are having a baby, wait until it's born to tell people the name!
