Do you think Keira is a chav name?

Well me and hubby love the name but my sisters think its chav, my work colleagues think its chav, his friends think itss chav and his brother and sister think its chav. I don't see why people would judge us though because I'm an accountant and he's a doctor so its not like we're chavs ourselves. And because she's due in May we've given her May as a middle name, so thats not chav either. What do you think.

Caron has a different meaning from Karen; although they sound the same they are different names.

I really don't see how Keira can possibly be a chavvy name.

moominmarvellous · 19/04/2010 17:58

I know a Keira with the middle name May - I've never once considered it chavvy.

Call the baby what you want to call her, people have more to say about potential names - they won't comment once she's arrived and named....that's what I'm banking on anyway!

Several people have wrinkled their nose at my girls name, but I'm not going to call her something others like if I'm not 100%. So I'm keeping quiet and still going with my choice They can comment at the time if they dare!

seaturtle · 19/04/2010 18:02

I like it. Think it's quite pretty.

Agree with the other posters who advise keeping quiet about the name. We did. Only told grandparents after we decided. Everyone else found out after he was born. I think I shocked people with the ordinariness of his name. They were expecting me to name him something strange like Rainbow!

Mumcentreplus · 19/04/2010 18:04

I have seen Karen used with a 'c' (Caron is a completely different name)..tis weird and people ask if its a 'k' or 'c' when spelling the name so its more common than you would believe..

sassysass · 19/04/2010 18:09

Keira/Ciara/Kira etc is not chavvy, just popular. I can imagine a doctor & PM called Kira so it passes the non-chav test for me.

I like the Kira spelling personally.

Keira is a lovely name. So what if it's used by people you clearly consider beneath you, what matters is that you like it.

Paulinespens · 19/04/2010 19:47

I quite like the name and think there are some horrible snobs on here.
I do prefer the Ciara spelling though.

shatteredmumsrus · 19/04/2010 19:54

I like it. I was torn between that and Caitlin for a girl. Then I had a boy and couldnt. Boooo

Ewe · 19/04/2010 20:05

I have a friend called Keira (but pronounce Kay-rah) and she is the complete antithesis of chav, went to boarding school and is a jolly hockey sticks type.

However, Keira, as in Knightley is both popular and in terms of age range I think that now it does tend to have chavvy connotations.

TheCatAteMyGymsuit · 19/04/2010 20:17

Two of the poshest girls I have ever met were called Kira and Karen (but pronounced Car-run). If you are secure about your un-chavness than I wouldn't worry!
Off topic, but does anybody call their children Sharon anymore? It's actually rather a pretty name.

bronze · 19/04/2010 20:19

I think it depends who it it
you have to be on the posher end to carry it off

franke · 19/04/2010 20:24

Kyra Sedgewick. She's no chav.

brockleybelle · 19/04/2010 20:25

horrid thread. the snobbery here is outrageous.

ib · 19/04/2010 20:34

I love it. But then I chose a name that many consider chavvy for ds. I don't care, as I've been accused of all sorts of things but never of being a chav.

I don't like the Ciara spelling, though, as I can't help thinking of it as pronounced like you do Chiara (in Italian)

Bucharest · 20/04/2010 08:26

Was Keira Thing,(actress) the original one to have that spelling?

I've just never managed to work out how you can possibly pronounce something that looks like it should be "care-a" the same as Ciara? Are they both versions of the same name?

I do think if you use the Ciara spelling, you'll have fewer negative comments, and as a traditional Irish spelling, it won't date like Keira will.

diddl · 20/04/2010 08:41

I think it´s the child/parents/upbringing that denotes "c/non c"

Both my childrens names have been referred to as "c" on here.

Having just visited UK & been told how well spoken & polite they are I care not one jot!

Also prefer Ciara & Kyra spelings.
Like Cara also.

Magaly · 21/04/2010 09:15

No I don't. I think some people think any name with a K in it is chav-ee.

Keira is an anglicisation of the name Ciara. A name that has been around for centuries.

Like others have said, I think May with a Y is nicer than Mae with an E. Just my opinion. But Keira May is a nice name.

ByTheSea · 21/04/2010 09:17

I like the name a lot in all its spellings.

CakeandRoses · 21/04/2010 10:48

Keira is a great name. Agree with others on spelling of Mae tho.

henry37 · 21/04/2010 12:09

Keira is not a name i love however i dont think its chav at all. i love both may and mae and think they get a hard time on here as i think its a classic preety name popular maybe but because its nice.

EsmeWatson · 22/04/2010 00:13

Yes I do - terribly so. Wouldn't use it in a million years!!!

Linnet · 22/04/2010 00:27

There is a Kira at my dd's school and she is most definitely not chavvy. I wouldn't say it was an overly common name as she is the only one out of her entire school of over 1000 pupils.

I think it's a lovely name and personally I prefer it spelt Kira or Ciara.

padpadpad · 22/04/2010 00:51

I actually quite like the name.

Not fond of the Ciara spelling. Thanks to an American singer people are starting to pronounce it 'see-are-ah' [hmmm]

mathanxiety · 22/04/2010 02:41

It's been See-ah-rah in the US for ages. Or Kee-ah-rah since the days of the Lion King. I think Keira is more pronounceable in the UK too. If you were in Ireland, I'd use Ciara.
