Awful biblical names

Anyone else out there who thinks some biblical names are just awful? My cousin just named her DS Enoch -- bleugh! Some other ones I'd never use:

Hepzibah -- sounds like hippopotamus or heffalump.
Jezebel -- obvious reason!
Jael -- can't get the story of her hammering a tent peg through some chap's head out of my own head.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I like loads of bibilcal names. Admit some are a bit too far out Nebuchadnezzar for example

I had lots of th eones mentioned on my list for ds3 top of which were Gideon and Elijah/Elias/Eliah
but DH could could only stretch as far as Isaac which of course is far too popular for my liking (poor ds3)

i know lots of boy jordans but they are now in their teens havent met a baby/ toddler jordan in ages . i would certainly think twice about using it for either sex now where as 15 years ago when naming my children i seriously considered it for dd chose bethany instead and then 2 years later for ds

juneybean · 17/04/2010 14:20

Of course the Duggars have quite a few.... Joshua, Josiah, Jedidiah, Jeremiah

mathanxiety · 17/04/2010 20:17

I don't like Joel, Caleb, Gideon, Jared, Enoch or Noah.

BusyMissIzzy · 18/04/2010 17:07

Not strictly biblical, but I know of someone who named their dd Nevaeh (pr NevAYuh).. because it is 'heaven' spelled backwards.

rubetube · 20/04/2010 17:08

Could I get away with calling a girl Ezra??? It sounds so ...... womanly!

TrowelAndError · 20/04/2010 17:14

We know a girl called Ezra. Truly.

stressheaderic · 20/04/2010 17:17

I have a Bethany too, I like its Biblical connection.

I know an Aloysius and an Elijah.
I also know an Ignacio but he's Spanish.
Oh and I know a Magdelene (as in Mary)

ActuallyMyNamesMarina · 20/04/2010 17:57

Hiram, a biblical king......my grandad was Hyrum (an alternative) - named after one of the early leaders in the Churvch of the latter Day saints!! (I have a strange family)

Enoch to me has connatations because of the Rivers of Blood speech, and it's not a name I'd like or chose.

moondog · 20/04/2010 17:59

Better these than the incredibly dull Matthew,Luke, Thomas type names.

moondog · 20/04/2010 18:00

Actually, the LDS gang have some amazing names eh?

I think that you have to pronounce Jed with about 4 syllables, Leonie for it to sound hillybillyesque.

Jeeaaaad

I like a lot of the names on this thread. Malachi is great, as is Ephraim. I would not have used them but I think they are cool.

MrsSchadenfreude · 20/04/2010 22:33

DD1's best friend is called Avishag. Nicknamed Shag. Not good.

nickelbabe · 21/04/2010 14:08

i was thinking about that name on sunday: it was in one of our readings and i thought, "that one'd go well on MN biblical names thread"

Strawbezza · 21/04/2010 15:15

Nebuchadnezzar. Judas.

Arcadie · 21/04/2010 20:53

Bronze & sexbombbikerchick I have a 4 yr old Gideon. Only one I know of so nice that others would consider it a name worth using.
As of 20 days ago I also have a Simeon which is an OT and New Testament name.

Both known by nicknames of Giddy and Simmy.... Fear they'll have grown out of that by 15 though!

NotanOtter · 21/04/2010 20:57

I actually think Judas a beautiful name

Dorcas and Ariel both been short listers of mine

and someone had dared to put dc5 name on here

sedgiebaby · 26/05/2010 08:26

I like Caleb, Jude, Gabriel, Noah, Nathaneal and Simeon
For a girl Lydia, Abigail, Leah, Lydia, Noah, Mattia and Talitha.
There are two stories about characters called 'Tamar' that would put me off using it, I think the same goes with Judas really.

SilveryMoon · 26/05/2010 08:39

I have a Luke. We chose it because ds1 is Jacob and dp wanted to keep the biblical theme.
I wanted Joseph or Matthew, but he is Luke.

SoMuchToBits · 26/05/2010 08:46

I like Ezra (and have met a child with this name). I also like Jonah, and Absalom. I have recently found an Absalom in my family tree. We also have several Oziases in my family tree (my great, great, great grandfather and his grandfather were both Ozias) and I rather like that too, even though it's a bit unusual.

marriednotdead · 26/05/2010 08:50

I too have a Luke but it's an old family name of ours.
An older friend had the middle name Obediah, and it always raised eyebrows when it was used

frogs · 26/05/2010 08:54

For Moondog:

The Utah Babynamer

Enjoy.

sedgiebaby · 26/05/2010 08:57

Marriednotdead, i met an Obediah once! He was known as Obie thougth
