Awful biblical names

Anyone else out there who thinks some biblical names are just awful? My cousin just named her DS Enoch -- bleugh! Some other ones I'd never use:

Hepzibah -- sounds like hippopotamus or heffalump.
Jezebel -- obvious reason!
Jael -- can't get the story of her hammering a tent peg through some chap's head out of my own head.

I like a lot of biblical names. I have Jacob and Isaac, love Ezra if we had another boy. I know a couple of Hyrums, a couple of Elijahs, Jude, Gabriel, Malachi, Ezra, lots of Noahs, Jonah, Caleb as well as lots of Josephs, Joshuas etc. But then I am LDS so might explain it, though I don't know anyone with really bizarre names

If I have a son, and, more unlikely, get DH to agree to this name, what do you think of Issacher?

A1980 · 30/05/2010 23:44

Napthali
Issacar
Gad

There are some underused ones just waiting to be revived, such as Zadok, Philemon and Casiphia

othermother · 31/05/2010 00:27

I had a cat called Malachi.

Then again, I also had a cat called Hairspray.

I like most of these!

lisianthus · 31/05/2010 10:01

Hagar. Never seen one of those.

ellesabe · 01/06/2010 12:13

Heman

I really like Isaac and Isaiah - Isaiah is a family name so we are considering using it for DC1 if it's a boy. Also really like Noah but it's too popular now

I love Jude. I know a Judas who goes by Jude. I too, knew an Obadiah at a nursery in the US I worked at, he was 3 and went by Oba. He had a sister named Ny'Ashia (try pronouncing that, bet you can't get it right!)

I am not keen on Ishmael, or any of the 'more popular' biblical names (i.e. Michael, Matthew, Peter, Paul, James, Thomas)

I never set out to have a tribe of biblical names, ended up chosing the name then looking up the meaning, at the risk of completely outing myself we have a Abigail, Talia, Bethany and Jacob

Takver · 01/06/2010 14:30

I love Biblical names, despite being not in the least bit religious. I know two Malachys, an (adult) Simeon (he shortens to Sim), and a sprinkling of others. I just think they have so much style.

We were very tempted to name dd Maria del Mar (in defence, we were living in Spain at the time) but came to the conclusion that not being Catholic we really couldn't get away with it

fatwildwoman · 13/07/2010 20:15

Am I alone in thinking Simeon = Simian (monkey)? And Issachar - bless you! As with Asher, Ishmael ...

Sinkingfeeling · 13/07/2010 23:26

I have a Martha and I love Esther, Elizabeth, Lois, Tabitha, Eve and Mary. Dh's grandfather is Jesse, which was on our list of names. Shame we had three girls though ...

Sinkingfeeling · 13/07/2010 23:28

Meant to add that I love Hepzibah (and the Eppie connection with Silas Marner) and very seriously considered it for dd3

AhLaVache · 13/07/2010 23:34

Levi.

It was bad enough when I thought it was a name for a status-symbol weapon dog on a sink estate. That its biblical irritates me even more.

thefirstmrsDeVere · 14/07/2010 00:05

Mine have a few biblicals between them. Asher, Jaidon, Jordon, Levi, Peter, are the ones that spring to mind.

I once went to a sewing class. One of the young ladies there was a real fanatical born againer. She was really quite bigoted about single mothers, homosexuals - the usual targets.

She named her son Genesis (he was BTW born out of wedlock to a single mother - her but that was ok cos she had repented

Pretty name but it didnt quite seem to fit as a name and seemed like she was trying waaay to hard.

I love biblical names, the madder the better. Nepthali is nice, Bethsheba is fab.

Each to their own.

I like most biblical names with good meanings. Names like Elizabeth, Rebecca, Abigail, Mary, Sarah, David, James, Andrew, Daniel, Thomas, Matthew and Samuel are classics because they've been used in this country for hundreds of years.

I'm not so keen on the names that describe places rather than people in the bible nor names like Leah, Aaron or Jason.

Hepzibah is great and I agree with MrsvWoolf that Obadiah is an interesting one.

foreverastudent · 14/07/2010 07:52

I've never heard of a child called Lilith, which is surprising considering how many Lilys there are.

Would anyone call their child Job?

4 boys called Matthew, Mark, Luke and John?

CharlieBoo · 14/07/2010 10:18

Issac and noah = bluurrrr

lovelymama · 14/07/2010 22:14

Isaac is the best name ever! Except when everyone spells it incorrectly like CharlieBoo. DS's nursery once spelt his name 'Isaaq'. I think the nursery nurse had the middle east war on her mind when she was writing it.

And my DS's cousin is called Noah - bet you'd love the rest of my family's names CharlieBoo
