Is it me or are these names DH likes awful?

I am 38 weeks pregnant and still dont have options for boys names as DH has said no to all my suggestions (we have some agreed girls names). Sat my DH down with the list of names from the national statistics office and the only ones he will consider out of 4430 different boy?s names registered last year in the UK are:

Maximilian
Conrad
Conan
Magnus
Julius
Augusus
Aurelius
Orson
Eugene
Valentine

Is it me or does DH think our DC will either be a roman emperor or a some sort of children?s cartoon character given to holding a large weapon aloft and saying something like ?By the sword of graystoke? to summon his powers?

I don?t think there is any of those I can live with. Thoughts?

I could just about live with Maximilian but he would forever be called Max, but I'd rather not.
I don't like any of them.
Sorry

bibbitybobbityhat · 16/02/2010 12:50

I quite like Eugene. Conrad's alright. Don't like any of the others - yes, they do all sound like cartoon characters of the Roman Emperor ilk.

Lets hope its a girl !

Is your husband joking?! I thought my husbands tastes were bad as he likes- for a boy- Hilary, Giles or Piers. I think he has dreams of his child becoming an investment banker...sorry to generalise investment bankers .

Seriously, no. I went to school with a guy called Magnus and he was weird. Someone else I used to know was called Conan and whenever he told people his name they said Really?! What, like the barbarian?

Julius could become Jules I suppose. Whats your husband's name?

Wheelybug · 16/02/2010 13:05

Maximillian - shorten to Max. I like (although don't really like the long form)

Gus for Augustus - quite like that

Conrad I think is ok

emmaecb · 16/02/2010 13:05

My husbands name is the very 70s Gavin.

Unfortunately he is serious, he has vetoed at least 50 suggestions from me which is why I asked him to go through the list. I think I need to do some very careful persuasion over the next week or so, although I like MMLJs ultimate argument!

Conrad is nice.

Max(imilian) is OK.

Um, that's it.

Good luck.

Servalan · 16/02/2010 13:45

Really like Eugene.

I like Max but not so keen on Maximillian

The other names aren't doing it for me at all though.

Lovethesea · 16/02/2010 13:46

They all make me think of someone with a trust fund and a place already sorted for boarding school ........

Cadelaide · 16/02/2010 13:53

I like them.

All except Conan (that's just silly) and Eugene.

Julius is a lovely name.

PanicMode · 16/02/2010 14:22

I love Magnus - DH and I were seriously considering this, but we already have a Rufus. Plus DS1 "hates Magnus, it's awful"!! So we've had to dump that one.

Maximillian is great too, but would be shortened to Max and there are millions of them (near where I live anyway).

But the others are somewhat unconventional yes, and I thought my DH was picky - our list from the census was similarly short!

Sidge · 16/02/2010 14:44

Conrad and Max(imilian) are not too bad but the rest are awful, sorry.

Can you tweak them slightly? Eg

Julius - Julian
Magnus - Angus

Or go for something a bit historical without sounding too daft, eg

Benedict
Montgomery (Monty)

Ziggurat · 16/02/2010 14:48

My best friend's very distant ex called his member Conan the Barbarian, so the name will only induce hysterical laughter from me.

If you really can't agree then one of you has to have the ultimate veto - and that person is you, since you've Done The Time.

butadream · 16/02/2010 14:54

I like Maximilian (Max), Conrad and Magnus very much.

mathanxiety · 16/02/2010 14:58

Maximilian -- Max is nice
Conrad -- LOVE
Conan -- Like a lot
Magnus -- like
Julius -- like
Augusus -- ok, if called Gus
Aurelius -- NOOOOO
Orson -- NOOOO
Eugene -- ok
Valentine -- okish

And I second what TMMJ says also.

shoobidoo · 16/02/2010 15:01

I love them all. They are all very elegant and quite popular on the Continent.

The only ones I dislike are

Conan - sounds a little American/tough
Max - very common/boring imo.

The rest are gorgeous!!

Albrecht · 16/02/2010 15:19

Maybe we should swop husbands as some of these are on my list and my dh has rejected all of mine!

Seriously tho, the name should be something you both can agree on and live with, rather than the opinions of randoms. This is what I'm going to suggest to my dh that we do - Ask him to look at your list again and you do the same with his list. Try and look at each name individually, then with your surname, middle names etc, rather than just as a collection of 'types' of name.

I presume he doesn't particularly like his own name and is trying to not put a child in the same position? FWIW I have an unusual name, as do all my family (my brother's name is on your dh's list!) and we all like it that way.

MumNWLondon · 16/02/2010 16:06

Not great, Conrad not awful and Max (short for Maximillian) is fine.

Sorry don't like the others at all.

sweetkitty · 16/02/2010 16:10

I feel your pain, DP and I cannot agree on a boys name either.

From your list I could live with Max and Magnus that's about it, where I am from a boy with any of the other names might as well have "beat me up" written on his forehead at school.

It's got to be a name you both love, you cannot just agree to a name because your DP likes it and vice versa.

Doozie · 16/02/2010 16:11

Magnus is great!

But I feel your ds will have some work carrying off those names...

Sidge's compromise idea is a good one.

I agree with the janitor.. "you are carrying the baby in your womb and you will be getting it out through a small hole or via a major op. therefore you get to choose. tis the law".

I think DH needs to meet you half way.

GrimmaTheNome · 16/02/2010 16:15

Conrad or Magnus are OK. Max would be, but as someone said, there's loads about (and at least 2/3 of them are dogs.)

belgo · 16/02/2010 16:18

Augustus is a great name, Gus for short.

DingALongCow · 16/02/2010 16:20

Maximilian - Love this
Conrad - OK
Conan - makes me think of barbarians in loincloths
Magnus - OK
Julius -OK
Augustus - Like
Aurelius -Love (have a degree in Ancient history, my son would have been Aurelia had he been a girl but my husband vetoed this for a boy- nickname Leo?)
Orson -Hate
Eugene -meh, puts me in mind of knickerbockers and sailor suits
Valentine - OK, although 'Val'?

but I live in an area where these names are not cause for a beating.

IsThatTheTime · 16/02/2010 16:23

Gus is good.
Orson makes me think of Mork and Mindy.
Conan has to be a no. What about Ronan?

Is your surname long/short/common/unusual?
