I am 38 weeks pregnant and still dont have options for boys names as DH has said no to all my suggestions (we have some agreed girls names). Sat my DH down with the list of names from the national statistics office and the only ones he will consider out of 4430 different boy?s names registered last year in the UK are:

Maximilian
Conrad
Conan
Magnus
Julius
Augusus
Aurelius
Orson
Eugene
Valentine

Is it me or does DH think our DC will either be a roman emperor or a some sort of children?s cartoon character given to holding a large weapon aloft and saying something like ?By the sword of graystoke? to summon his powers?

I don?t think there is any of those I can live with. Thoughts?

haha, I love all the comments about Conan, it's my brother's name! (unfortunately for him he was born not long before the Arnie film...)

He did get called Conan the Librarian at school... on the plus side everyone knew who he was, and these days he doesn't get any barbarian comments (he's not really the barbarian type...)I do actually think it's a nice name, but maybe that's because I'm used to it!

Would your DH maybe go for some classic but slightly less poncey names like:

William
Henry
George
Theo
Arthur
Julian
Rufus?? (I don't really like it, but it's in a similar vein and better than the ones you have!)
Gene instead of Eugene??

Wow, been away for a day and just checked back. Thanks for your responses. Glad to have my suspicions that they are a bit out there, bordering on the downright weird, confirmed and some of the alternatives are good suggestions.

DH not posh at all and he actually accuses me of wanting posh public schoolboy names. My initial suggestions were Sebastian, William or James.

I think definitely too much comic book reading. Still working on him with one week to go. Perhaps girls names list was easier because we are convinced it is a boy.

lol sorry emma but i dont like your "normal" names either nor anything too out there. my sons are tommy and mason and my girl is akacia ...and still i like these names thankfully. i liked
Rafe (from pearl harbour) for a boy and
sierra rein for a girl
but i gave partner control over the name with this one (i know stupid stupid me) now im facing a lifetime with a daughter called elizabeth (sorry to all the elizabeths reading x

Romanarama · 18/02/2010 14:14

I like them all except Conan (the barbarian) and Eugene (because it sounds like the nerd in a US film).

My favourites are Aurelius, Valentine and Conrad.

Maximilian is a bit ordinary.

Rhuidean · 18/02/2010 14:29

Conrad and Magnus are great. Fantastic middle names. If you want to put him off point out they will be shortened to Connie and Maggie

Have you suggested Hector or Alexander to him? Along the same lines but easier to live with perhaps.

jojochanel · 20/02/2010 13:02

ulysess? .

MaggieMaeve · 20/02/2010 13:05

I love Augustus, Julius and Eugene is growing on me.

Aurelius isn't my style. Believe it's quite popular in France. Sounds like oh really? us?
Orson, no. I dislike this
Valentine, I love it but you have to know he's going to be confident, popular, clever, sporty, modest.. he has to be everything AND modest to pull off Valentine. BUT.. I like it. I get it.

MarthaFarquhar · 20/02/2010 13:05

Valentine and Maximilian are fabulous. However IMO you need to be possessed of a small castle to carry them off. Not sure they will work in a semi.

MaggieMaeve · 20/02/2010 13:06

Ps Magnus is nice. I like it. Quite mainstream, one of the tamer choices on his list.

If he likes Roman Classics, would he be persuarded to go for Marcus? I like Marcus. It has that Augustus lite feel.

Conan is ok.

KimiGaveUpStarbucks4Lent · 20/02/2010 13:13

Have you been letting him watch gladiator again

RnB · 20/02/2010 13:21

I like him style. Would consider all of these except Conan, Eugene and Valentine.

KimiGaveUpStarbucks4Lent · 22/02/2010 07:22

Conan the accountant!

Rejessta · 22/02/2010 07:40

It could be worse, just continue the list of Roman emperors:

Vespasian
Tiberius
Septimius (actually, I like Septimus as a name)
Flavian

On the other hand I love Gaelic heroic names, like Finn, Brand and Conor, which capture the theme without being too out there.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 22/02/2010 07:52

Hmm
try this site you might find something you like there

I wish my DH would of been more open to unusual names, the only boy name we could agree on was Jake. (but my DS is very much a Jake now, I couldnt imagine him as anything else!)

nighbynight · 22/02/2010 08:04

Valentine (Val) is nice. Maximilian (Maxi) is Ok.

dont let him have Conan, pleeeeeeeeese, for your-son-the-accountant's sake.

How about some German names - these ones are common in my childrens school

Florian
Anian
Sebastian (Basti)
Leon
Andreas
Bernhard
Julian
Marcel

nighbynight · 22/02/2010 08:07

oh, just saw you wanted Sebastian! I used to think it was posh, until I came to Germany.

Maria2007loveshersleep · 22/02/2010 08:30

I really like Julius. Conan a definite no no (I think almost everyone agrees on that one). I like Maximilian-max- too.

SqueezyB · 22/02/2010 08:58

can I just fight the corner of Conan, I like it! It's my brother's name, it's not pronounced Con-AN like the Americans would, but like Ronan with a C. It's an Irish name that means 'wise'.

For the next generation everyone will have forgotten the barbarian references! Think Arthur Conan Doyle instead...

Magnus reminds me of the icecream although that's Magnum actually. But still. Really really really don't like Magnus.

But Julius is beautiful, I think. Actually DP & I were discussing boy names last night & Julius was, coincidentally, on our list.
