Is it me or are these names DH likes awful?

I am 38 weeks pregnant and still dont have options for boys names as DH has said no to all my suggestions (we have some agreed girls names). Sat my DH down with the list of names from the national statistics office and the only ones he will consider out of 4430 different boy?s names registered last year in the UK are:

Maximilian
Conrad
Conan
Magnus
Julius
Augusus
Aurelius
Orson
Eugene
Valentine

Is it me or does DH think our DC will either be a roman emperor or a some sort of children?s cartoon character given to holding a large weapon aloft and saying something like ?By the sword of graystoke? to summon his powers?

I don?t think there is any of those I can live with. Thoughts?

Thanks for all your help on this. I think I might come up with some historical classical names that arent quite so difficult. Fortunately, I am still finding this funny rather than a source of conflict. I am hoping that when he/she arrives, it will all fall into place.

Marcus?

BooHooo · 16/02/2010 17:13

Don't hate his list at all but they are quite "out there"

Valentine was my 1st choice for a boy, much to DHs panic

BitOfFun · 16/02/2010 17:15

Conrad and Eugene ok- rest are a bit, er, adventurous.

nickelbabe · 16/02/2010 17:18

oh, emma! they're all awful.
apologies if anyone has dss with the names listed.

Chunkyrice · 16/02/2010 17:41

Maximilian - Jackie Collins stylee entrepeneur
Conrad - Lots of integrity
Conan - Circus performer
Magnus - Intellectually vigorous
Julius - Stylish and business minded
Augusus - Fantastic name but born in August?
Aurelius - A philosopher
Orson - Dramatic despot
Eugene - Scientific artist or artistic scientist
Valentine - Toy boy

LadyCressida · 16/02/2010 18:13

Bless - boys are brilliant! I want to know what his girls name list is now!

Maximilian sounds okay as you know it would end up Max in no time. Or how about suggesting something like Marcus which is a bit less OTT, or maybe Alexander.

Or tell him He-man's real name is Adam

Miggsie · 16/02/2010 18:18

Does he want his son to get the shit kicked out of him at school?
If so, he's going the right way about it.

They are all awful with the exception of Conrad.

seeker · 16/02/2010 18:22

Tell him to change his own name to Conan and see how he likes it!

RollBaubleUnderTree · 16/02/2010 18:27

I like Conrad, its unusual without being odd.

Max is fine but there are loads of them about.

heQet · 16/02/2010 18:34

Maximilian - Max is ok
Conrad - I went to school with a Conrad and he was a total bastard, so that name makes me feel angry
Conan - the barbarian. oh dear god no.
Magnus - magnusson,
Julius - will probably be called julia at school - kids are mean
Augustus - gloop
Aurelius - erm
Orson - welles. I quite like that one. sort of.
Eugene - bit 'geeky' iyswim
Valentine - Oh, you might as well just hand out the sticks to the other kids on his first day of school

Skegness · 16/02/2010 18:41

Max is fine but Maximillian awful. I like Conrad and Conan. And Magnus. The rest are a no-no!

aarghhelp · 16/02/2010 18:42

We found boys names hard - our 1st child would have been called Alexander (DH did classics as part of his degree and quite liked A-the-great). We also considered Nelson, which we liked, because we admire Mandela, and we thought it might have been quite funny to have had an "alternative" hero for that name. DS ended up being called Adam which we liked because it could lend itself happily to a variety of different bloke-ish personalities, from builder to MP.

pagwatch · 16/02/2010 18:46

he wears brogues doesn't he...
and has button down collars on his week end shirts

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 16/02/2010 18:46

I like them all except Conan.

Valentine and Magnus are my favourite.

I really like Julius, shortened to Jules.

Also quite like Augustus shortened to Gus.

tanmu82 · 16/02/2010 18:55

sorry, I don't like a single one. Me and DH also had completely different ideas on names for our DC's....when we have our next I know I'm gonna have a fight on my hands.....

VictorHugo · 16/02/2010 18:57

Augustus, Orson and Eugene are Ok.

but yes has he been watching gladiator too much?

chickbean · 16/02/2010 19:13

About halfway through labour with DC3 I thought "This is my chance, DH won't refuse me anything now" so I said "Can we call him Jude?" to which he replied "I suppose so". We ended up with a girl and hadn't thought of any girls names at all

MamaVoo · 16/02/2010 19:25

It's a man thing. My DH thought that Optimus was a sensible suggestion. I think if I had to choose one from your list it would be Orson. Gus just sounds short for gusset to me.

Beasknees · 16/02/2010 19:31

don't you know that when the baby arrives you just say ' darling hubby isn't John (insert your favourite name) gorgeous', and because of all the hard work you've had to go through and because you said it, it becomes quite difficult to not have that name iyswim

Pingpong · 16/02/2010 19:45

From your list I like Magnus. The rest are not my taste at all. GL!

serinBrightside · 18/02/2010 00:01

I went out with a lovely Conrad at uni

xxkt1xx · 18/02/2010 11:25

at least he is liking unusual names!!! embrace that as could be a lot worse (although the only one i liked myself was max)
i would much prefer these than everyday boring names xx good luck
