Baby Names and Initials

We are expecting a baby girl in July and our favourite name for her is Emily. Incidentally, we were worried that this name was too old-fashioned and unpopular, but have read in a magazine that this is currently 2nd most popular girls name!

Anyhow, the question: our surname begins with T so her initials would be ET. Do you think this would matter? Would this be difficult for her to live with? What do people think? Perhaps we should find another name?

I wouldn't have thought it's a problem Joanie. After all, any teasing will come from her own peers and I'd be surprised if in 2008, ET would mean much to 7 year olds....

Assuming she has some middle names, she won't be ET, strictly speaking.

And in the next 5 years who knows what films will capture children's imagination? No set of initials is failsafe, so go with your favourite name.

GAH!!! I AM an ET and I was about 8 when the film came out - don't do it!! No but seriously, I agree with Croppy that not many kids will have heard of it by then and it really didn't cause me that much heartache as kids find something else to do after a week or two, and initial's aren't as obvious as names. Incidentally my mother nearly named me Anne as a middle name, spelling out EAT and as I've never been what you'd call svelte, I am very pleased she chose Jane instead!!

Must share this one with you - a school friend named her new little daughter Bliss Tallulah, and since then my horrid kids have referred to her (in private!) as Blister!!

True - I used to know a Steve Tinker ... no prizes for guessing what he was called!

My husband's initials are PMT and at work everyone is referred to by their initials - how sad - or hysterically funny, depending on how you feel - is that.

Thank you all for your replies! From people we've talked to, the concensus (ie. wrinkled expression and look of pain) seems to be that the initials ET might be a bit of a burden! Due to the popularity of the name Emily we are going off it anyhow. Fickle or what!

Im 30 weeks preggo with twins!! Need help on names. We know we are having a boy and a girl and have decided on Harry for the boy. For a girl its , Georgia , Olivia , Isabella or Molly.
I have a favorite I think but friends always agree with me. Honest opinions pleeease! What is your fave and least fave. Hubby has a fave that differs from mine and we have agreed that whatever gets the most votes wins! We like all the names and just cannot decide.

Sara7, your're mad!!!! But for my vote I think Harry and Olivia sound really nice. But then again, Harry and Bella sounds cute!! Harry and George might end up sounding like you have two boys. Used to love 'Molly', but not as much now.

It's hard enough choosing one name isnt it! Good luck.

FWIW, I like Molly best and Olivia least but they're all good names.
I've got twin boys but didn't know their sex in advance and went into labour confidently armed with loads of girls names and just one for a boy. Luckily we thought of another name on seeing our first born son. It just seemed to suit him. So if you can't decide maybe you'll be able to tell which would be best for her when you see her.

I've always loved the name Olivia but dh vetoed that one straightaway. Isabella - I'm sorry but it always reminds me of my aunt whose name is Isabel which then reminds me of is a bell necessary on a bike which she always used to be teased about. Georgia is lovely too. So my vote is Olivia and Georgia - its a bit like pop idols this!!

I think Harry and Molly sounds sooo cute. Also love Georgia but not keen on Isabella. Like Olivia but its getting very common now.

Oh, just to stick my oar in as well, I think they're all lovely but Olivia IS very common, or popular, I should say. I like Isabella best but it may be a bit fussy. How about just Isabel?

I have an Olivia and there's loads about! I thought I was being different Ha Ha! I'd always loved the name and my son 6.5 year old was going to be Olivia. I even bought Olivia tissues from Tesco in the vague hope he'd be a boy!

How about Rhiannon?

I have friends with two young children( not twins) called Harry and Olivia, so i think those two go well together!
However....I always think olivia reminds me of that olive spread butter substitute!

Hey Joanie, what about if you use Emily as a middle name? So long as her first name doesn't start with V, M, P, G, B, D, J, L, N, W or Y.

Hmmm. Maybe that's not such a good idea after all!

I liked Kaysi, Holly, Danica and Emma. My husband didn't like the first 3 and our surname is a McM... so Emma sounded daft. We both liked Elyssa or Alicia and Tessa. Tessa won! And our ds was always Daniel even before he was conceived!

I think children "grown into" their names...I know of a few parents who named their children names like Oscar and George and everyone thought it a bit odd, but now they are older you can't imagine them being called anything else!

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet....well, maybe so but it wouldn't seem quite as romantic to receive a dozen red "turnips" would it?!

None of the others are really a favourite of mine, but it's your daughter after all!

Lol Rhiannon. I had the name Chloe for a girl 9yrs ago but I had a boy. I thought Chloe was sooo unusual . The only one I had heard of was Richard and Judys daughter. How wrong was I! A couple of yrs later and every tom dick and harry is called Chloe. Still love it though.

I have to say that Harry is a fantastic name [] - congratulations (beware the Potter references though; we failed to anticipate them and can't be bothered with it)! Just to add my tuppenceworth, I would choose Bella. No reason; just a lovely name. Let us know what you decide.

Well Olivia is a margarine, which would put me off (or is that Olivio?). I knew a girl called Molly and at school it was Molly Mophead. Georgia reminds me of Georgie Porgie. Isabella is lovely, but Bella is on Tweenies and I HATE the Tweenies.
Sorry, that doesn't actually help much does it? I don't know anyone called Isabella so I would go for that one, sounds nice and Spanish, would really suit her if she had dark hair!

I have a niece named Georgia, her mother is Olivia and a friend with twin girls that she named Georgia and Scarlett.

My favourite is Georgia, with Molly and Olivia second. Not too keen on Isabella, though don't know why.
