Baby Names and Initials

We are expecting a baby girl in July and our favourite name for her is Emily. Incidentally, we were worried that this name was too old-fashioned and unpopular, but have read in a magazine that this is currently 2nd most popular girls name!

Anyhow, the question: our surname begins with T so her initials would be ET. Do you think this would matter? Would this be difficult for her to live with? What do people think? Perhaps we should find another name?

Biblical names seem to be the in thing in my area - I've got a Luke, which is a pretty well-used bible name, but I know a Malachi and a Judah (boys) and what about Jezebel for a girl! (Don't think she was a very nice lady, if my memory serves me well)

Bron, if I remember correctly, you live in the Cardiff area? As a newcomer to south-east Wales, I was slightly alarmed when everyone I met shortened my name from the first moment they spoke to me - before it's only ever been my family and close friends that have called me "Em". I soon realised that that's what they do here! My Bethan is Beth, Catrin is "Catr" (no, don't know why not "Cat"!). Lucky for dh - his name is Mo, and you'd be hard pushed to shorten that - although I wouldn't be surprised if someone round here did!
After 4 years, I've picked up the habit myself and automatically shorten everyone's name. (Yes, and I do say "by yer" for "over here"!)

Middle names are Louise and Luke.

Rebecca really HATES it when her aunt winds her up by calling her Becky Lou Lou!

Dh's brother insists on Ben, he knows it winds dh up! EVERY single time dh 'bites', he just can't ignore it.

Although everybody except my family shorten my name, I think I call everybody by their name in full. One of my customers years ago never called anybody other than their full name. I dont like names shortened, we might as well all just have nicknames.

I have twin girls - they were going to be Jennifer, Georgina and Harry (I didn't know their sex when we choose them - and would have been really stumped if it had been 2 boys). When I cam e out of hospital baby1 and Baby 2 were Anne-Marie and Henrietta (which turned out to be a family name) and Henny as she is known has initials HAM.
my boss's wife was originally Julie Andrews - one of the funniest I came across was Orson Cart

I also don't like names shortened and it is amazing how difficult it is to find a name that you can't shorten. I am a bit of traditionalist and not fond of anything with weird spellings. Also don't like names that look like surnames. Why do we have this urge to be different?

I like Naomi but we can't use that for our child if she is a girl as it is my niece's name.

SueDonim · 15/12/2001 20:32

I love Naomi and would have used it for our last baby, except that the pronounciation has changed in recent years. So many people now say it as N-I-omi, which I hate! I knew it would drive me to distraction to have it mispronounced, so we went for something entirely different. Still hanker after it, though.

A librarian friend was telling me they have a 'Versace' come into the children's library. It's a boy, I think.

Calling Sara7

Looking for an update on your twins...I figure you are about 38 weeks now - assuming you haven't had them yet as I know twins are usually born early...
So!!!! Have you had them and what names did you decide upon?
Hope all is well! Thinking of you

Rather late to the fray, but my children have the initials EH and ARGH... I think the last poster has it right, pregnant women should be monitored where baby names are concerned
