Does this posh name sound nice or rediculus?

I just wondered what people thought of the name Monty for a boy?
I'm not pregnant, but we are trying. I do like posh names, but not rediculus sounding. Does Monty sound rediculus in this day and age? I also like Oliver, Elliot, Hugo and Archie.
Please don't worry about offending me, as I say, I'm not even pregnant yet. Just wondered weather I have bad taste.

Monty is a fab name, not at all ridiculous

LetThereBeRock · 06/12/2009 18:28

I hate Monty. I've no problem with posh names but I just hate the sound of it and it's very 'wet'.

buktus · 06/12/2009 18:30

the full monty....

sweetnitanitro · 06/12/2009 18:31

I know a woman with a DS aged about 6 months that is called Monty, short for Montague. I'm not that brave, I would go with one of your other choices.

tiredfeet · 06/12/2009 18:34

I think Monty is ok, not ridiculous but it is a bit drippy sounding, and it sound more like a nickname than a real name. Would it be short for something?

Really like Oliver though

rollonbedtime · 06/12/2009 18:34

Thanks, I don't think it sounds wet. I thought it was quite manly sounding. I don't know if I'd be brave enough either. I do like it though.

I like it,, maybe you're not posh enough!! That's not an insult btw. There are names I ruled out for similar reasons. Hugo,, hmmm do I have my own antiques business to pass on to him? (no).

Julius... Am I certain he's destined for greatness? (sadly no)

By the way, I met the mum of a monty in Wimbledon about 4 years ago, just after i'd had my dc2 and she wasn't at all posh. So maybe it's not even a posh name anymore.

Disregard my entire post.

Yes, we were always planning on having a Lucy and Oliver, a long time before we were married. We used to talk about future children.
We have our Lucy, we're just waiting on the Oliver now. (Or maybe Olivia)

Poncetastic

rollonbedtime · 06/12/2009 18:44

Lol Oh, O.K!

rollonbedtime · 06/12/2009 18:46

I think it might be a love it or hate it kind of name, leaning more towards the latter.
I think Oliver is a safer name. I don't think many people would dislike that name.

Monty to me will always be "I mean to have you, even if it must be by burglary".

So I'm going with ridiculous.

skidoodle · 06/12/2009 18:50

I really dislike the name Oliver.

And I have TWO nephews called it.

BitOfFun · 06/12/2009 18:51

I have just decided my imaginary baby boy will be called Ignatius. Iggy Jones would be a cool kid. I almost want him to be real.

PheasantPlucker · 06/12/2009 18:51

Yes, 'Uncle Monty'..... 'my dear boy...' Great character!

JaneiteMightBite · 06/12/2009 18:51

I hate Archie and don't like Elliot much but love Monty and Oliver.

sassy · 06/12/2009 18:52

Oh, it's a dog's name.

Seriously, I've known 2 dogs called it. Ridiculous

rollonbedtime · 06/12/2009 18:52

Oh yes, Withnail and I. I love that film. I also think Uncle Monty was fab in it.

OP posts:
nickytwotimes · 06/12/2009 18:54

Nah, don't like any of them tbh.

'Elliot's a fat kid who eats paste' - name that movie...

Monty is indeed the uncle from Withnail.
Archie and Oliver are a bit meh and Hugo is very poncy.

rollonbedtime · 06/12/2009 18:55

Oh yes, it would be a great dogs name. Maybe we shoud get a dog insted. Lol.

I must admit, it does piss me off when I hear dogs being called Lucy.

How could anyone not like Oliver? I don't see what there is not to like about it ?

OP posts:
MollieO · 06/12/2009 18:57

I like Oliver although he will only answer to Ollie or Ols .

BitOfFun · 06/12/2009 18:58

Nobody is biting for Iggy then? Good, it's MINE

skidoodle · 06/12/2009 18:59

Ignatius Jones is fab.

I just hate the sounds in Oliver. It also reminds me of ancient shrunken heads, as in Oliver Cromwell and St. Oliver Plunkett.
