Does this posh name sound nice or rediculus?

I just wondered what people thought of the name Monty for a boy?
I'm not pregnant, but we are trying. I do like posh names, but not rediculus sounding. Does Monty sound rediculus in this day and age? I also like Oliver, Elliot, Hugo and Archie.
Please don't worry about offending me, as I say, I'm not even pregnant yet. Just wondered weather I have bad taste.

I love Monty ang Hugo. I wanted Monty for DS2 but DH told me to fuck --off- rethink.

There is a woman at school with a puppy called Monty. When I told her it was my favourite name for DS, she was like .

SuWoombOfImmaculateConception · 06/12/2009 19:01

fuck off

Grr.

rollonbedtime · 06/12/2009 19:02

I like Ollie too. Not too keen on Ols though.

I always worried people would call my daughter loose. Instead, the girls in her class, all call her either Lucy-Lou or Lou-Lou. Which I think sounds nicer.
We call her Lulabelle sometimes.

Oliver and Hugo are the easiest names to live with from those in OP. And they travel well, too.

rollonbedtime · 06/12/2009 19:08

Skidoodle- Oh, I see. I never even thought of that.
I still like it though.

We had an Ignatius at my school. He was absoluitly lovely. (swoon)

It was my grandad's middle name (Irish Catholic, you see), so I reckon I could get away with it as a family name...is it wrong to want to get pregnant now just to use the name even though I shouldn't really?

BitOfFun · 06/12/2009 19:14

My friend has just had a little baby boy- it is giving ne a major brood-on.

Everyone who thinks its a good name for a dog can fuck off have a rethink. It is ds' name and he is the coolest kid in town, but when we named him, someone within the family who has no children, but does have dogs, said "Oh god MONTY, that's a dog name, you can't call him that." I had to be restrained from them... Particularly as their dogs are called Lucy and William.

PanicMode · 06/12/2009 20:13

I LOVE Monty, despite the Withnail/dog associations - it's on my shortlist (Montague in full) but DH thinks that giving a child the name Monty with our double barrelled surname and sending them to state primary is cruel.....I disagree as we live in an area where I think we'd be ok - in fact I know three - so that has put me off a bit as in my book that's 'popular'.

We can't have Hugo as it doesn't work with our surname, and there are hundreds of Olivers here, so that's out for me, even though I do like both of those.

(I have no idea what number 4 is going to be called - we can't agree on anything at the moment!)

MaggieNollaig · 06/12/2009 20:18

I like Iggy. It's too unpredictable to be Poncey. It's just plain... omg.! but I like it.

Montgomery even posher than Montague. I think (not sure Irish person here, didn't study this at school) but was their a British war here called Montgomery/?? or was that an American

MaggieNollaig · 06/12/2009 20:19

ps instead of Archie, Richie is much more out of the box? dykwim.

imo real cool comes from outside of the box (maaaaan)

MaggieNollaig · 06/12/2009 20:21

brood-on, ha ha.. you're a dooorty hooor. you'll be pregnant with a little iggy in no time!

Tizzyjacko · 06/12/2009 20:22

Great name for a dog, not so sure about a boy.

cathers · 06/12/2009 20:29

Monty is a great name. i like all the names on your list, but I love Ignatius (which I know isn't on your list). It's as fabulously Catholic as Aloysius but without the Brideshead connection.

MaggieNollaig · 06/12/2009 21:22

Just watching The Small Island on bbc1. keep hearing the name monty. I'm not liking tv version jumping around like mad.

ToffeeCrumble · 06/12/2009 22:24

Nickytwotimes

'Elliot's a fat kid who eats paste' - name that movie...

Is it The Sure Thing?

Monty100 · 06/12/2009 22:51

OP I think its really cool.

Divatheshopaholic · 06/12/2009 22:53

Oliver is nicer name, Monty is trying hard to be posh, sorry

Georgimama · 06/12/2009 22:56

My dogs are called Lucy and Monty. Sorry.

nooka · 07/12/2009 06:53

My upstairs neighbour had a cat called Monty. I don't like diminutives as given names and the long forms are really fairly serious landed gentry territory to me.

MamaLazarou · 07/12/2009 07:34

I don't like Monty at all. Makes me think of Mr Burns from the Simpsons.

RnB · 07/12/2009 10:43

I just do not get why people say 'it's a dogs name'. It's not Rover FFS. Dos can be called any name, and often are - I met a dog called Dave the other day. My son supposedly has 'a dog's name'. Incredibly he hasn't started barking yet

It is a human name which some people may give to a dog.
