Does this posh name sound nice or rediculus?

I just wondered what people thought of the name Monty for a boy?
I'm not pregnant, but we are trying. I do like posh names, but not rediculus sounding. Does Monty sound rediculus in this day and age? I also like Oliver, Elliot, Hugo and Archie.
Please don't worry about offending me, as I say, I'm not even pregnant yet. Just wondered weather I have bad taste.

FWIW I think Monty is a great name

mumoftoomany · 07/12/2009 11:39

I really like Monty and Elliot.

Really don't like Oliver/Olly at all, and don't like the sound of Archibald/Archie and Hugo.

Yes I also have a bit of a dogs name, if you use the pet form ending in ie that is.

I was at a bf's house years ago and his mum said, Are you hungry maggie? i said, em no actually i'm fine thankyou very much mrs patterson etc.. she said, I was talking to the DOG. I felt a fool!

but susie, lucy, maggie, jenny, abbie, all those names very classic. but can be used for a dog. a dog needs a name!!

I don't bark either.

Even names like Ken and Dave are used 'ironically' for pets. so the pet issue is a non-issue. I'd worry more about a name being a bit too sexually inappropriate. ie, lola or honey. but that's just me.

How can names 'belong' to dogs or posh people (or chavs or cats)etc?

Imo anyone can grow into any name, this whole categorisation is ridiculous imo.

I know dogs called Steve, John and Jamie and I know very 'common' boys/men called Monty, Crispin and Theodore.

Choose a name you love!!

MsDoctor · 07/12/2009 14:08

Love Monty.

mathanxiety · 07/12/2009 15:22

Don't like it -- I always think of The Full Monty. I prefer Hugo or Elliot from your list.

Montgomery was on our shortlist for dc3 for my fil who's named after Bernard Montgomery, british war hero. i love Monty.

anyway, didn't get used - we had a girl.

Hullygully · 08/12/2009 15:07

I like Monty

But Rediculus is my favourite.

BelleDameSansTurkey · 08/12/2009 15:10

LOL Hullygully...

PuppyMonkey · 08/12/2009 15:28

My DD is named after a cat. Called Esme. If that helps with the animals issue.

I quite like Monty now. Didn't used to. I quite like Montague and Montgomery too. Can't be doing with bleddy Hugo at all though, sorry. Tis a knobby name.

SuWoombOfImmaculateConception · 08/12/2009 15:54

Ooh Hullygully, with your witticisms you are really spoiling us.

I have found you most amusing this week, thank you.

BettyButterknife · 08/12/2009 18:52

I like Monty. I think Oliver sounds far more wet than Monty.

How about Mortimer/Morty? Also on my list

theminniebauble · 08/12/2009 19:02

I love Monty- it makes me think of the cricketer Monty Panesar who was (until falling out of form this year) a real test match crowd pleaser.

I know that the association won't necessarily please non-cricketers but Monty P rocks!

I suggested it for our DS who's due this January but my husband wasn't keen. I think that we're going to go for another name with a solid cricketing pedigree- Freddie. Don't worry- we didn't choose it for that reason. It's a family name.....

ThumbleBells · 08/12/2009 19:06

My best mate had a cat called Monty - I can't take it seriously as a name now.
I like Hully's thoughts...
