But my point is not that it should only be used by foreign people in foreign lands......its that IMHO the name "Pia" sounds good when it is said with an accent. It doesn't sound so good when its said in Glasgow........for want of another place......

My MIL is foreign. My oldest daughter's name sounds wonderful when she says it. And it sounds good when I say it IMHO. I'm merely saying that "Pia" doesn't sound good in all accents.

I like Pia, and Nia (used to go to school with a Welsh Nia) but am getting pretty fed up of the number of Mias that are about now. Not that keen on Tia either (Tia Maria, anyone?)

Probably an urban myth - and nothing to do with names - but allegedly she was/is such a bad actress that when she was playing Anne Frank the audience shouted 'she's in the attic!' when the nazis turned up to search the house.

Pia is actually a pretty name but there are prettier ones IMO. I work with an African girl called Pieh - pronounced pea - and no one takes the mickey at all. She's just Pieh - no mushy, no green, no pod, nothing.

I know a child called Pia very well and to the best of my knowledge no-one has ever teased her because of her name. I think the Pia Zadora comment would mean nothing to most people under 30 TBH.

Kwini, fgs, it's not xenophobia. When selecting a name for my children I wanted a sound that was instantly recognisable and identifiable to all. I just wasn't looking for a name that would be unusual and reflect my culture but have people trying to play it back in their own head after I'd said it trying to figure it out.

It's not correct to say that it's Xenophobic not to want to use a non-English name in Britain. That is a ludicrous over simplification.

FWIW, I wouldn't say I loved it, but it's OK. Nice and short (as someone who has to write out her own name an awful lot, I wish I were called Pia Potts, just to save time!)

I like it! It sounds exotic. I imagine she would be very pretty. Almost like a name like Farah or Saskia (which I only know about via Farah Fawcatt and that girl off BB/Eastenders). It sounds quite posh aswell (nothing wrong with that!!)
