i just think of pia as short way of saying pain in the ass. sorry.

suwoo · 21/03/2009 08:46

Pain in the ass is normally PITA though, but I can see what you are thinking booboo. What are you thinking now Leannabanana?

annasmami · 21/03/2009 09:57

Yes, Pia is a German name. It's pronounced Pee-a. Lovely name imo.

Kwini · 21/03/2009 15:11

Sometimes I'm amazed at how narrow-minded MNers can be! Pia is a lovely name - German yes, but also Indian. I knew a great girl at school called Pia - no one made fun of her name, ever.

frumpygrumpy · 21/03/2009 15:13

I'd like to like it.......but my first thought was also the "pia, pia, pia-no" song.

MrsMattie · 21/03/2009 15:17

I think it's a lovely name. I know an Italian woman called Pia.

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 21/03/2009 15:20

Cassiopiea - commonly shortened to Pia in Italy

Knew a Pia, she was lovely

frumpygrumpy · 21/03/2009 15:24

There is a common thread here............and its foreigners.......it sounds great when you have an Italian accent etc........

Kwini · 21/03/2009 18:09

"There is a common thread here............and its foreigners.......it sounds great when you have an Italian accent etc"

Why are people here so xenophobic? What a terribly Little England attitude, that foreign names shouldn't be adopted...

Anyway, Pia sounds the same no matter what your accent.

Leannabanana · 21/03/2009 18:47

its a toughy....i think it is a worthy alternative to the very beautiful but very common Mia....i still like it....i love cassiopeia shortened to pia....that is lovely...but i am now singing pia pia piano in my head.....ohdear.x

I am the music man,
I come from down your way and I can play.

What can you play?

I play piano

Pia pia piano, piano, piano

pia pia piano, pia pi-anooooo

Is what came to mind

Leannabanana · 21/03/2009 19:07

yup....that be the one.....its insurmountable really i think.....poor little pia.....i think it would just be mean...

christywhisty · 21/03/2009 19:08

It's also Norwegian. I know one Pia who is half norwegian.

RustyBear · 21/03/2009 19:30

I had a friend at school called Maria-Pia (her dad was Italian), but she dropped the Maria herself.
She definitely pronounced it Pee-ah.

piscesmoon · 21/03/2009 19:42

No

Steaknife · 21/03/2009 23:14

I vote YES to Pia. I would pronounce it with a short A.

I always thought it had Greek origins.

I wanted Pia for my little girl, but DH banned it, said it sounded like a bird chirping.

deste · 21/03/2009 23:21

Yes I like it.

kwini, chill out, chill out

"Why are people here so xenophobic?"

Why are people here turning so touchy about everything?

frumpygrumpy · 22/03/2009 11:41

"Pia, my-a darliny-a, woud-a you like-a leetle ice-a cream-a" (Bella Lasange accent)

"Right Pia hen, d'y want a ice cream doll" (fg's granny's heavy Scots accent)

Nope. Sounds totally different to me PMSL!!!!

edam · 22/03/2009 11:41

I'd have to suppress the urge to sing 'I am the music man' at the poor child. So no, IMO.

Jenbot · 22/03/2009 14:13

Rustybear, I wonder if that's the Maria-Pia I worked with ages ago!

RustyBear · 22/03/2009 15:10

Surname beginning with G, Jenbot? (at least her maiden name was & when I googled there's still someone of that name in the same area)

Kwini · 22/03/2009 16:25

I'm chillin' like a watermelon, frumpygrumpy

It's not about being PC, it's about daring to consider options beyond some people's rather limited horizons. One thing that irks me about these threads is when people have the temerity to reject a name on the basis that it's foreign. Not liking the sound is one thing; rejecting something simply because it's different is another.

MargotBeauregardesGavel · 22/03/2009 16:28

pronounced 'pya' I thnk and it is short for something.

Can somebody Italian remind me?

I don'tlike it. it sounds incomplete.

I have a funny feeling its short for something totally different like Francesca.
