I believe that Demi Moore named her daughter Scout after the character in To Kill a Mocking Bird.

Just wondering if any of you have been inspired by a book/film character when choosing names for your children

My db named his first-born after a character in Father Ted

SniffyHock · 13/01/2009 22:27

I would love to use Atticus but I fear that everyone would think i was deing poncetastic!!!

DC love the book 'Dirty Bertie' so are pushing for that for number 3

WillyWonka · 13/01/2009 22:35

NBJB - so your niece/nephew is called MrsDoyle?

NotBigJustBolshy · 13/01/2009 22:43

WW - now that really would have given the grannies something to complain about. Actually one of the grannies thought db had named the sprog after the dog from the Magic Roundabout. Am not sure which is worse...

On their first date, my parents discovered they both loved Lewis Carrol. Several years and 2 boys later they had a girl and called me Alice. They had decided their first daughter's name by the end of that first date.

I overheard someone explaining that she had named her son Conan after Conan the Barbarian.

I know a Mr & Mrs Pollard who were considering naming their DD Victoria.

They went with something else in the end, and about two months after the baby was born, Series 1 of Little Britain started.

It would be very hard to have to explain repeatedly that no, your Vicky Pollard was NOT named after the character.

nappyaddict · 14/01/2009 02:07

Beatrix and Herbie.

MiaWallace · 14/01/2009 09:49

That would have been very unfortunate ninedragons.

I'm another one that think Atticus is a fantastic name.

I was named after a literary figure. In the book, she had a frustrating life and killed herself. I never thought it boded well for me.

spicemonster · 14/01/2009 09:59

My DS was named after a character in a US cop show. Well, more that I was hunting for the right name and this guy came on and I really like his character (honest, upstanding, kind etc) and liked the name too.

Everyone thinks he's named after a character in a famous children's film though ...

nappyaddict · 14/01/2009 10:17

I can't for the life of me think of a children's film with a character called that. Which film is it?

DaddyJ · 14/01/2009 10:20

Missus would probably veto Han Solo

Having said that, one of our favourite names was inspired by a Dire Straits song.

Fimbo · 14/01/2009 11:00

I know of a child called Harry Potter. They chose Harry deliberately.

angel1976 · 14/01/2009 16:33

My DH's cousin would have named their child Anakin if it was a boy. I do like the name but don't think he could ever lived down the Star Wars association. Thank goodness they ended up with a girl with a far lovelier name - Annie!

Raahh · 14/01/2009 17:24

Many people think i named ds after the little boy in E.T- Elliot. I didn't, I just like the name.

cikecaka · 14/01/2009 17:29

Only name me and DH could agree on for DD3 was Kate, found out later it was the name of a character in lost

ilovelovemydog · 14/01/2009 22:34

Wanted to have DD's middle name, Bono but DP said, 'no'

Magic · 15/01/2009 15:03

DS's middle name is after my hubby's favourite funk-soul singer.
The same week DS was due, this singer was touring the UK for the first time in donkey's years and DH was desperate to go and I said it was fine by me. So off went DH to have a great night with his friends at the concert - while I stayed at home, puffing and panting through labour!
DH saw the concert and made it home with half an hour to spare before DS made his way into the world.

subtlemouse · 15/01/2009 15:05

OK I admit it; ds is named for his grandpa, a late friend and a certain spanish swordfighter in the Princess Bride. He has a lot of names!!!

MirandaG · 15/01/2009 15:19

One of my daughters was named after the little girl in Bagpuss - her older sibling was watching an epidode and said 'I know, let's call the little sister, Emily'. So we did. I would have loved to have called one of my daughters Demelza (after Poldark) but I think it might have been a bit of a life sentence. Dh wasn't having any of it anyway .

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 15/01/2009 16:19

Very cool Subtlemouse! but then I have to say that

dublinmom · 15/01/2009 16:35

DH is a Queen fan and when I was pg baby was going mad whilst listening to it once. promised 'Mercury' as a middle name if it was a boy. Had a lovely DD instead!

Jessie179 · 15/01/2009 16:47

My DD was named after a R&B singer that passed away at the height of her career. Aaliyah. Dont know if anyone knows her but she also starred in "Romeo Must Die" with Jet Li. Both me & DH always loved the name but only realised when I was pregnant. We never had another name and not even a boys name and prayed that it was a girl as we couldnt think of a name. I feel sad should we have another as I dont have any other names.
