Ellynor?

We are contemplating the name Ellynor - spelt as it sounds, for our next dc, we want to be unusual and know that Eleanor is the usual spelling but are quite keen of going slightly off centre.

Honest thoughts please - but do be gentle

Why choose a name and insist on a peculiar spelling? It just looks as if you can't spell!

Because Elinor doesn't look pretty and I think that Ellynor does{stamps foot}

When you meet Ellynor you have to be lovely to her - it won't be her fault that her mum and dad chose the spellings

Actually it's growing on me. Looks a bit Tolkienesque. But I do feel for your DD having to spell it all the time.

But that's better than a full on unusual name. Take it from someone whose name is routinely misspelt AND mispronounced. GRRR.

Spongebrainbigpants (now that's a good name!) - I had a similar email problem with my surname, it was solved by the IT dept adding the wrongly spelled variant to the email addresses on my account, so the wrongly spelled ones just came into my In Box with the others)

Well Joseff or Charlea are featuring highly, but they are not top of the list

can't be doing with delibereate mis-spelling to be interesting - it is just a PITA for the rest of the child's life.

Josef is a legitimate spelling of Joseph in other countries though.

Oh FFS Eleanor is beautiful. Call her that spelt like that or a different name.
Ellynor is just silly.

I used to work in a neonatal unit, and people spelt their child's name Shervorn, etc. because they had heard it but never seen it written down.

PLEASE don't do it. It makes it look like a terrible mistake, that you can't spell. And your child has to live with her name long after you stop writing it on forms.

Could ask IT to do that but frankly if people can't be bothered to spell my name correctly why should I be bothered to answer their emails!!

thumbwitch, totally with you on that one - don't get it at all! My IVF consultant said to me that all the adults she knows with crap unusual names gave their children normal names.

If you put a 'y' in the middle you create a different sound. Do you want it to sound like Elly -Nor (sounds a bit elephanty) or do you want it to sound the traditional way?

How would you pronounce the "nor" part of Ellynor? If "gnaw" then it should have an "e" on the end to be more spelt as it sounds - so Ellynore.

If "na", then either "na" or "nah" - so Ellyna or Ellynah.

ILB, don't be sad - but do take this as a snapshot of how people in RL will react (privately, probably) to "Ellynor".

Charlea looks like a girl's name - not sure if you were serious about that though?

ilovebrucie, you may feel like your opinions are being ridiculed, but imagine how your DD is going to feel when all the other children in her class, aged about 8, ask her why she (or her parents) can't spell her name properly.

I knew a girl called Mysheele. Interesting spelling of Michelle apparently - we just thought her parents had real literacy problems.
