Ellynor?

ILoveBrucie · 30/12/2008 22:17

We are contemplating the name Ellynor - spelt as it sounds, for our next dc, we want to be unusual and know that Eleanor is the usual spelling but are quite keen of going slightly off centre.

Honest thoughts please - but do be gentle

But the 'help with spelling' thing only applies for the very short time it takes your daughter to learn to spell her name. For everyone else, it will be a pain in the neck as they will have to unlearn the conventional e-l-e-a-n-o-r spelling.

'Fraid I'm boring too: I think you should opt for Eleanor or Elinor or, alternatively, pick a genuinely wacky name, rather than an invented spelling of a conventional name.

thisisyesterday · 30/12/2008 22:25

but Elena is a whole different name surely? said elayna?

aidansyummymummy · 30/12/2008 22:26

please no.....she will soon get fed up with her unusual spelling

fishie · 30/12/2008 22:27

ooh yes. at work we have elena eleni helena. it is a lovely name in all its variants.

Elinor or Eleanor are both lovely.

Please don't do Ellynor, it just looks a bit silly and unfortunately lends itself to 'witty' schoolyard variations like Smellynor.

fishie · 30/12/2008 22:29

ellen or helen is more likely the british variant.

Twinklemegan · 30/12/2008 22:29

Just call her Ellie fgs. Or Elly if you must.

spongebrainbigpants · 30/12/2008 22:30

Please don't .

I have a very boring name, Clare, but everyone spells it Claire and it drives me insane!

So how all these poor kids are going to cope with their 'modern' spellings god only knows - especially as, with the advent of email, spelling your name properly is even more important. I lost plenty of work emails cos people were sending them to Claire instead of Clare.

Eleanor is a beautiful name btw.

nula · 30/12/2008 22:30

Vamonos speaks wisely!

TigerFeet · 30/12/2008 22:30

We just took the H off Helena Thisisyesterday

Don't blame us - my Mum was hormone riddled and I was 17 and too daft to know better

THank god we didn't get away with it eh? The poor girl would have forever been explaining that her name wasn't Elleyna!

ILoveBrucie · 30/12/2008 22:30

Sometimes names spelt as they soound are great and my dh and I are of the opinion that this is one of those times, I feel quite embaressed about it now reading allyour posts

So what about some suggestions for alternatives then? this baby is going to arrieve soon and I need some names to give it

(sti8ll don't know if it is a ds or a dd)

DoubleBluff · 30/12/2008 22:32

Ellynor is not nice, looks so worng

thisisyesterday · 30/12/2008 22:35

the thing is, to me Ellynor wouldn't be pronounced Eleanor.

it would be ellie nor.

it isn't phonetic at all. IMO.

that said, I am very strongly of the opinion that you should name your baby a name that you love, and it shouldn';t matter what other people think.

Twinklemegan · 30/12/2008 22:36

Jayne - that's spelt pretty much as it sounds? Or Holly, Poppy, Sally - the list is endless really.

Why is Elinor not as it sounds?

spongebrainbigpants · 30/12/2008 22:38

Why not still call her Eleanor, but spelt correctly?

ninedragons · 30/12/2008 22:39

Sorry, mis-spelt names are vile.

ILoveBrucie · 30/12/2008 22:40

Because we like the name Ellynor, we actually prefer it to Eleanor.

Why is it ok to spell Isabel/Isobel/Isabelle/Isabelle? but not Ellynor

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 30/12/2008 22:41

well, i suppose those are all accepted spellings of it?

anyway, it's up to you! if you love it then use it. but please don't ask for opinions then get upset lol

Heated · 30/12/2008 22:42

Elinor (as in Sense & Sensibility) which I think is English variant, Eleanor which is the traditional or even Elenore but please, please not Ellynor!

spongebrainbigpants · 30/12/2008 22:43

So you want it to be pronounced Elly Nor? Hmm, sounds weird to me but I'm very traditional when it comes to names. Think it's cos I'm a teacher and have come across many kids with unusual names/unusual spellings and they often hate them.

But, you go with what you want!

I never asked about my DC's name on here cos I knew I'd be told it was really boring!

ILoveBrucie · 30/12/2008 22:44

you are right, I shouldn't have asked for opinions, but you have all made me realise that it doesn't matter whtat you all say, we will be calling her Ellynor if she is a girl

You lot had better hope we have a boy (although I don't dare tell you what that name will be )

OP posts:
WalkingInAWonderStuffingLand · 30/12/2008 22:44

Those are all accepted spellings, Ellynor is something you just made up, looks like you can't spell (sorry)

Twinklemegan · 30/12/2008 22:46

I'm intrigued as to why you don't like Elinor. Why don't you like it ? [DS was going to be Elinor]

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 30/12/2008 22:50

Daymean for a boy?!
