To say Jack has been no 1 for 14 years I know very few of them!!!!

I find it really interesting how a name can go from obscure to being in the top 5 within a few years. For example Ruby, a friend of mind has a dd (about 7years old) and when she choose the name I thought blimey that's a bit of an old lady name, now it's right up there in the top 10.

Some names seam very common, but don't appear in the top 20, must be a regional thing.

lunamoon2 · 30/12/2008 12:29

btw my eldest dd's name is not mentioned

Glad ds name is going down the list too!!!!!

IllegallyBrunette · 30/12/2008 12:37

Dd1 - 42
Dd2 - 7
Ds - 3

MrsMattie · 30/12/2008 12:40

I can't believe Zac and Dylan aren't Top 10. They are in north London.

The Top 10 for girl's is pretty accurate for where I am. There are an abundance of Olivias. I thought Isabella would be higher, though.

eclectech · 30/12/2008 12:44

I think it's easy to get obsessed by position, rather than the actual numbers. We nearly didn't use our favoured name for DS because it was popular, but when we looked at the numbers decided it was silly to go with something we liked less. The most popular name here in Scotland was only used 692 times, and by the time you get down to #10 you're only looking at 300 odd. Doesn't seem that popular to me, IYSWIM.

melpomene · 30/12/2008 20:43

I've just been looking at the list of all names used in Scotland this year, from eclectech's link. One of the stranger girl's names is Efeoghenetobore (I Googled it and no references come up, so maybe somebody made it up?). There was also a girl named Disney.

BalthazarCandleQueen · 30/12/2008 20:48

DS1 No.20
DS2 Dewi (probably Top 100 in Wales!)

melpomene · 30/12/2008 20:53

And someone in Scotland named their baby daughter Laura-Ashley [hmmm]

melpomene · 30/12/2008 20:56

I also feel sorry for the Scottish baby boy named Rong, because people will always spell his name wrong.... :O

theboob · 30/12/2008 21:10

DD is number 1
DS 1 is 40
DS2is 17

JentlyDoesIt · 30/12/2008 21:12

DD is no 50

DS isn't on the list

lulurose · 30/12/2008 21:13

DD1 is at 21! Thought it would be even more popular than that. DD2 isn't on the list...not surprising, I've not met another child with her name yet...

Alishanty · 30/12/2008 21:14

None of my dc's names are on the list, well dd's middle name is. I have a Solomon (which I wouldn't expect to be on the list) and an Esme (which I thought might possibly be).
I know tons of Ruby's. Nice as the name is, it is very popular now.

ThornyRose · 30/12/2008 21:30

I'm thinking of Esme if dc2 is a girl Alishanty, what reations have you had to the name?

OliviaMumsnet · 30/12/2008 21:35

It's because everyone is naming their DDs after ME

Alishanty · 30/12/2008 22:01

Thornyrose - we have had mixed reactions to the name Esme (we pronounce it Ezmee, which is the only way I had heard it pronounced up until now) Some people say Es-may which I don't really mind, alot of people say it's really gorgeous, some people have never heard of it. My uncle at xmas - 'what's Esme all about then?' Bit rude I thought, but he had never heard of it, thought it was short for something. Also, some people have misheard it as 'Lesley' lol! Still really love it, have always loved it after my gran told me about her friend with the name when I was little. If you like it, go for it.

ThornyRose · 30/12/2008 22:07

Thanks Alishanty - I do really love it and dh likes it as well which I was very pleased about

NotanOtter · 30/12/2008 22:09

am LOVING Julia

winterblues · 30/12/2008 22:11

Fuck fuck fuckity fuck. I tried so hard to find names that were unusual and clearly failed spectacularly. Two of my dc's names are in those lists. My brother told me it is nigh on impossible to choose a different name as the names you like are in your subconcious because they are already out there. And so double fuckity fuck, I hate it when my brother is right.

Alishanty · 30/12/2008 22:12

It's great your dh likes it Thornyrose. It was one of the only names we could agree on and I was so pleased as I have like it since I was small

NotanOtter · 30/12/2008 22:13

winer just because they are on the list does not mean they will go high up

DrowningInClutterandtinsel · 30/12/2008 22:15

Just checked and DS is 4036 according to bounty. Would be really interesting to know what number there are to get the place on the list.

The names we considered and rejected as being slightly too far out were 46869 and 2644. Not sure what to make of the fact one is slightly more popular than the name we chose!

ThornyRose · 30/12/2008 22:19

I'm not pregnant yet but we are trying!

With dd it was easy as we named her Eva, (after my nan) which was lucky as I couldnt find a girls name I liked.

This time round I'm planning early incase dc2 is a girl! Esme is the only girls name I have found I like. I'm just worried about them having the same inital incase people think I planned it.

Soprana · 30/12/2008 22:20

Hurrah! My DD's name isn't on the list!!! Result!

feetheart · 30/12/2008 22:24

Neither DD nor DS's name on the list! Double result
