Finn or Felix?

Is Felix too consciously middle-class? I like the fact that Finn doesn't belong to a particular class and will worry that pople think i'm trying to impress by using a typically middle-class name like Felix? I am aware that Felix is the more unusual of the two but I don't think that popularity bothers me as i've loved both names for a long long time. Surname is Atkinson so they both go well.

Just after some opinions on them really.

TIA

Finn

schneebly · 27/09/2008 13:21

like both but agree that Felix is a little more Boden iyswim. I would say Finn.

chocciedooby · 27/09/2008 13:23

Finn is lovely

ScummyMummy · 27/09/2008 13:35

I like both. I think Finn is much more trendy- it's a middle class eschewing the traditional and trying to be slightly cool and offbeat name, imo, sort of in the Alfie, Savannah, Delilah, Wilf mould. I like that Felix means "happiness", though I suppose it's asking to give birth to an eeyore to take that into account.

That's interesting scummymummy, I would have said that Felix was more trying to be offbeat. Felix has SUCH a great meaning doesn't it - all part of the attraction!

I'd go for Finn.

McDreamy · 27/09/2008 13:45

I have just persuaded DH that Fin(Lay) is the boys name for us if this baby i a boy of course. Jury's still out on a girls name! So in answer to your question Finn!

ScummyMummy · 27/09/2008 13:46

I really think you can think too much about how names will be viewed. Every name has class connotations pretty much but unless you choose Algernon or Waynetta I doubt that many people will think about that the vast majority of the time. And anyone important will just start to love the name because they love your baby.

graffiti · 27/09/2008 14:46

This is very true ScummyMummy - well said.

McDreamy Finlay is lovely too, we did consider using a longer version but have decided thre's no point if he'll always go by Finn.

I wish I was having twin boys so I wouldn't have to choose. Finn & Felix would be great names for twins too!

Felix just makes me think of a cat sorry.

ja9 · 27/09/2008 15:03

i LOVE Finn. Would have been dds name had she been a boy.

SBMJLJ · 27/09/2008 15:59

I would have said Felix was previously not a favourite of mine, but it would have been out of context then (and yes I would have thought about the cat).

However, I now know a little boy called Felix, and it really suits him and I think it's a really nice name. I don't at all think of it, or of him, in the way that you are concerned about. It's slightly unusual but nice, and yes it goes with your surname.

I love Finn though which was on my list, but couldn't convince partner, or many others, that it is also a girl's name once we found out we were having a girl. Love it for a boy though, and so I think both your names are great.

dilbertina · 27/09/2008 19:38

Felix - definitely.

Felix 100%

Thanks ladies.

Still V. confused.

One minute I think definitely Felix, then an hour later I think Finn is the one.

Naming is tricky.
