elfontheshelf, I do know someone with a baby called Colin. Have to say it seems very odd saying "and how is little baby colin" but like most odd names, you just sort of get used to it!

Well, amoongst the names I like least and would never have used are:

Mildred
Millicent (like Millie though)
Maureen (but love Maura)
June
Marjorie

Giles
Lindsay (I know a male one)
Norbert
Gerard
Norris

...but names are indeed a matter of opinion and what I like others will hate and vice versa. No-one should take it personally.

raindropsonroses · 26/08/2008 14:22

I don't understand why some people would be offended. The opinions are on the names only and should not be taken personally.
People certainly don't hold back giving negative opinions about names on other threads, whether asked for or not.
My dd's name has been mentioned too - I may yet flounce

Lola
Danielle
Tilly
Courtney
Madison

Lewis
Jake
Alfie
Jayden
Riley

I can't stand names that become really popular for a short time - I don't know why anyone would want to call their child the same name as every other child in their area/generation. I give you:

Ellie
Chloe
Millie
Ruby

Joshua
Jacob
Oliver
Jack

lol i'm always emailing name suggestion to my DH and today got fed up of the 99% veto rate so copied and pasted a load of these to him...

he nearly fell off his chair at Marmaduke

wonder what he'll make of Tarquin!

Time was, I'd have gamely posted a list of five girl and boy names I dislike, not thinking for one moment anyone who'd chosen that name for their DC would give an elephant's toenail for what I, a stranger, thought, and that it was all just harmless chewing the fat.

I'm old and wise now.

Treeny, you are on thin ice my friend...the hordes bearing flaming torches will be massing as we speak...

I don't particularly like the really popular names either. I don't hate the names per se or think snooty thoughts about people who use them, just would prefer my kids to be the only ones in their class with a certain name. But people NEVER think you feel like that, they feel you have taken a potshot at their entire lives...

I liked Otis (am actually TTC so all theoretical) but husband who works in construction said "that's the name of an elevator manufacturer" so that put pay to that.
What about Finn (Finley?) although want to go with my dad's name for middle name which is Edgar so worried Finn Edgar sounds like 'vinegar'.
I like Pippa for a girl??
Enjoying the banter ladies! assisting my boring day at work pass by :-)

Ok, my ds is the first name on Peri's list. Bit annoyed it's on there as too trendy? Was hoping to be unique in my poncetastic choice.

Yes, I did, oh raindrops with the memory of an elephant - back in the far off days of about 6 weeks ago when I never imagined for a second anyone would get the hump about my idle speculations (they're only names ffs). But it caused such a kerfuffle I am actually incredibly wary about expressing ANY opinion without a million provisoes. Hence not posting any names in this thread. Basically, I enjoy talking about names, but I don't really care what other people call their kids. Obviously I have OPINIONS, but they only seem to cause distress and humpage, so er....

Such dreadful names. How could a loving parent inflict such horrors on their baby?

Report

No, SM, I started a names thread a few weeks ago, inviting people to speculate about which names would go wildly out of fashion in a few years - I used the word 'rancid' which I meant completely flippantly, but which I think some people were upset by. So I rein in my opinions or try to use blander language now, which isn't as enjoyable, but people seem to take things so personally that I decided I'd better. I don't look down on ANYONE for the names they choose, which I was certainly accused of; but we all have opinions. To me, it doesn't matter what others think of a name and it's just a bit of light relief to chat about them...but it clearly does to many people...so I am wary, and therefore not coming up with my own list of 'terrible' names. Not after some of the abuse I received last time!

scottishmummy · 26/08/2008 18:45

ok thanks for clarifying.names threads inevitably usually upset.names are so personal to parents
