Another thread from me I am afraid.

Emmeline shorted to Emmy?

OP posts:

I like it and it's unusual without being weird.

tortoiseSHELL · 29/07/2008 22:58

I really like it too!

ravenAK · 29/07/2008 23:00

Also reminds me of 'Emma' by Hot Chocolate (covered by The Sisters of Mercy') - I teach an Emmeline who was named after the song.

It's fab.

chipmonkey · 29/07/2008 23:05

EffiePerine, that's exactly what popped into my head when I saw the thread title! But I love anything by AA Milne.

vanloadtovenice · 30/07/2008 09:17

Emmeline Harris in Anne of Green Gables too! I like it, but if you shorten it to emmy, there will def be heaps of them as emilia has the same shortening.

Loriycs · 30/07/2008 11:57

A lovely traditional name, i really like it. Dont shorten it, it spoils its beauty. It makes me think of a line in a Fleetwood Mac song''on the way down to Emmeline''

It's lovely. She was a matriarch and a half. It was on my list as was Christabel, which I like even more, but DP can't stand it.

hw2004 · 30/07/2008 15:37

It's lovely

MrsFluffleHasAWuffle · 30/07/2008 15:40

Emmeline is a beautiful graceful name, I love it and am going to put it on my list!

alittleteapot · 30/07/2008 15:46

Beautiful.

frazzledoldbag34 · 30/07/2008 16:10

Sorry, really sorry but I don't like it. (Am I really the ONLY one?)
And out of interest is it pronounce Emme - leen or Emma - line?

I like Christabel though. That's going on my list! Think my DH will like it too.....

frazzledoldbag34 · 30/07/2008 16:11

Emmy is ok though - I know one who is shortened from Emily and it really suits her.

frazzledoldbag34 · 30/07/2008 16:12

I also had Emery on my list last time - DH loved it. Could also be shortened to Emmy - non?

artichokes · 30/07/2008 17:45

Frazzled - are you trhinking about Christabel for the sufferage connections?

I was most drawn to christabel (rather than Emmeline or Sylvia). However, I then did some research on her. Unlike her mother and sister she didn't support universal suffrage - just votes for rich women. Also she was more right wing and advocated things such as the disbanding of trades union. Later in life she became a very, veryevangelical christian.

For me the associations of the name christabel are less positive than emmeline and sylvia.

LadyThompson · 30/07/2008 17:53

Sadly that's true about Christabel (gorgeous name though) All the Pankhursts were Tories, but Sylvia rebelled and became a great lefty, estranged from her family and had an affair with Keir Hardie. Sylvia's real first name was Estelle (or Estella, can't quite remember): Sylvia was actually her second name.

MrsMattie · 30/07/2008 17:56

Really lovely.

frazzledoldbag34 · 30/07/2008 18:15

No artichokes, I just thought it was a really pretty name.
Still do......and prefer it to Sylvia and Emmeline despite its connections.

BriocheDoree · 30/07/2008 18:33

Lovely name. One of my DD's favourite poems is Emmeline has not been seen for more than a week from the AA Milne collections.

Alishanty · 31/07/2008 09:00

Love it. Also because of the AA Milne poem.

Botbot · 31/07/2008 09:08

I like it too. Almost universal approval on a baby name thread!

(I think someone needs to make a book of Mumsnet-approved baby names )

ninedragons · 31/07/2008 09:21

Lovely, though you will come across the occasional mis-pronunciation I should think.

amyjade · 31/07/2008 10:59

Izzybiz is an Emmaline! we call her Em.

I think it's absolutely lovely. It's on my shortlist. I also love it shortened to Emmy - I have an Isabella shortened to Bella, so we are likely to shorten it despite any good intentions
I don't think you should worry about people confusing it with Emily - lots of names are similar to others.
