DH has chosen Reijko (Ry-co) for a boy. we don't know the sex yet.

My choice for a girl is Scarlett.

Honest opions please, be as blunt as you like.....

Ry - co?

Sounds like a business to me.

belgo · 20/06/2008 14:23

Reijko - very hard to pronounce. Is it scandinavian?

Scarlett's ok.

is he japanese?

if he isnt its bloody awful

NormaStanleyFletcher · 20/06/2008 14:24

Reijko - not sure really. Do you have a really really easy sirname? Otherwise your boy would spend his life explaining how to spell his name

scarlett is nice

cadelaide · 20/06/2008 14:24

trying too hard

nkf · 20/06/2008 14:26

Honestly? Terrible. Is it a famliy name, in which case, you might have to go with it. But on sight and by spelling, a no-no.

MaryAnnSingleton · 20/06/2008 14:27

if it's made up then no - if it's a family name I suppose so.

LuLuBai · 20/06/2008 14:27

I think it sounds fine - it really depends where you or your DH are from and what your surname is. I have to disagree with NormaStanleyFletcher. If you have a really really easy British surname (e.g. Smith or Jones) then Reijko may sound odd. But Reijko Rassmussen or somesuch similar works.

Enid · 20/06/2008 14:28

sorry

changet that to 'is he Finnish? If not its bloody awful'

Lio · 20/06/2008 14:30

I think one would get used to it, just like with all unusual names. He will spend his life spelling it for people, but then lots of people with 'normal' names have to do that too e.g. Amy, Ami, Aimie, Aimee...

HonorMatopoeia · 20/06/2008 14:32

Dh is Finnish and I think there are more accessible Finnish names out there to be honest . We had Mikka for a boy, but then bloomin' Mika the singer came along and ruined it all!

bubblagirl · 20/06/2008 14:35

i think if you like it then that really is all that counts as anyone excepts another childs mane anyway

and its nice he has chosen a name

i love unusual names its easily said once explained how to pronounce you can probably exspect several spellings but thats fine my ds name gets spelt 3 different ways and its not that hard of a name

just if you both like it then use it no one is judgemental once a baby is named they suit there name and thats it

Flumpybumpy · 20/06/2008 14:35

He is definaitely English and it is not a family name. He saw it on a TV programme and liked it and I stupidly agreed that I would name baby if it is a girl and he can if it is a boy.

We already have a DD called Caitlin and a DS called Jake. My surname is nothing unusual although it does get spelt wrong a lot of the time.

For the record, I HATE the name Reijko I think it sounds like an oil company or something.

Enid · 20/06/2008 14:37

oh dont be silly

if you hate it dont have it

what about Magnus? has the same sort of Finnish explorere ring to it

MaryAnnSingleton · 20/06/2008 14:37

in that case it's ridiculous and you must say no !

HonorMatopoeia · 20/06/2008 14:37

Can you compromise on using it as a middle name?

PrettyCandles · 20/06/2008 14:38

If you hate the name then it's not the right name for your child. You may have agreed to let each other name the child, but you didn't agree to name your child something that the other parent couldn't bear. Time to re-negotiate.

nkf · 20/06/2008 14:38

Blimey. What TV programme? He's got to have a more personal and serious reason than that for saddling a child with how is it spelled again?

LuLuBai · 20/06/2008 14:47

In that case - NO WAY!

Flumpybumpy · 20/06/2008 14:56

He keeps asking family and friends if they like to try and get someone on side but so far everyone hates it. Hopefully he will take the hint and choose something better.

snice · 20/06/2008 14:59

It sounds like a waste management company -sorry

nooka · 20/06/2008 15:16

I think spelling it would be a pain, and if you really dislike it then your dh should think again. But then I think that names should be chosen by both parents together. Does he like Scarlett?

belgo · 20/06/2008 15:27

there's no way your dh should be allowed to choose a name that you hate (and no one can pronounce!)- that would be very selfish of him.

Anna8888 · 20/06/2008 15:31

Reijko? After Caitlin and Jake? Very, very odd indeed.

Scarlett doesn't particularly go with Caitlin and Jake, but is OK.
