I know the name Oscar is very popular at the moment. We really like it as it is such a lovely name but also really love Ozzy as a nickname.

Just wondering how many Ozzy’s people know (in real life.. so not Ozzy Osbourne haha).

thanks

Personally I'd go with Alexander. In a sea of Oscars you'll be grateful not to have him referred to by the first letter of his surname.

Thatcannotberight · 22/03/2026 07:48

2 Oscar children, 3 dogs and a cat.
Interestingly, when DS 1 was in cubs there were 4 Alexanders ( he was one of them ) , now there are none, only 1 in DS 2s year and absolutely no dogs or cats.

I knew one yonks ago here in Ireland. It wasn't that common back then. Nobody called him Ozzy. Oscar / Deer friend in Irish. He was a great hero in the legends of the Fianna.
The name became popular in Sweden as one of their Kings had that name - his mother being of Irish descent. It's also used in other Scandinavian countries and Germany. And in South America, though I'm not sure why.

  • Might have been more than one King 👑 of Sweden? Also spelt Osgur but less often. I prefer Oscar.
RaraRachael · 22/03/2026 07:53

Two Oscars but neither shortened to Ozzy. Tbh where I live people don't seem to shorten names that much.

CheddarCheeseAndCrispSandwich · 22/03/2026 07:55

Lots of Oscars (humans and dogs…including my dog 😂). None of them known as Ozzy though.

YerMotherWasAHamster · 22/03/2026 07:56

When I was at college 35 ish years ago I hooked up with an ozzy in the student union office.

Other than that, none.

I expect there will be a flurry of them now though, for a while.

Eenameenadeeka · 22/03/2026 07:58

Loads of Oscars, never heard them called Ozzy though.

PurpleFlower1983 · 22/03/2026 07:58

I know lots of Oscars and two Ozzys but none who use Ozzy as a NN.

Needspaceforlego · 22/03/2026 08:00

I know a few under 10 plus a dog.
None shortened yet but give it time into the teen years.

I prefer Alex / Alec / Al / Zander to Ozzy or Oz.

Abhannmor · 22/03/2026 08:05

Professor Wiki tells me there were two Kings Oscar of Sweden. The mother of Oscar 1 was a French lady of Irish descent called Desirée Clary. In fact Napoleon suggested the name to her after reading the old legends. Now there's posh for you.
Good luck with everything OP 🍀 🤞

SardinesOnButteredToast · 22/03/2026 08:08

Two.

Edited as RTFT: three if you're counting a dog as well.

RustyBear · 22/03/2026 08:12

One. He’s a cat.

user2848502016 · 22/03/2026 08:14

There’s one in my DDs class (year 6), and I know an older one about 18. I can’t think of a younger one so I think it’s slightly less popular among babies being born now.
It’s a good name, no reason not to use it if you love it

MonsteraDeliciosa · 22/03/2026 08:15

I know 3 human Oscars, none are “Ozzy”.

I also know 3 canine Ozzys

mamaduckbone · 22/03/2026 08:17

Several Oscars in both of my ds’s age groups (teens/early 20s) but none of them is Ozzy. I think you would have to instigate that as a nn if you wanted it, as it wouldn’t be one that would occur naturally (like Joe for Joseph, or Tom for Thomas, for example)

Whatwasithinking1 · 22/03/2026 08:17

I don't know any Oscars. I know one Ozzy but his full name is Oliver. I really love the name Oscar, and if it's your favourite then I wouldn't let popularity alone put you off. Hope the induction goes well!

TappyGilmore · 22/03/2026 08:17

Don’t know any Ozzys. Know lots and lots of Oscars it’s a very popular name.

JuniorMint14 · 22/03/2026 08:18

To counteract an above poster, I have taught some lovely Oscars. Never known one shortened to Ozzy. But I think I prefer Alexander if you're still torn between the two!

GothicCola · 22/03/2026 08:19

I know 2 kids called Oscar. One about 13ish who goes by Oscar, and one who is in reception who is an Ozzy.

GoodVibesHere · 22/03/2026 08:27

I'd go for Alexander, nickname Xander.

Pernicketywishes · 22/03/2026 08:57

I know one who goes by Ozzy. But several who stick with Oscar.

Pernicketywishes · 22/03/2026 09:00

GoodVibesHere · 22/03/2026 08:27

I'd go for Alexander, nickname Xander.

I know several Xanders… and they’ve been ratbags! 😂😂😂

RoyalPenguin · 22/03/2026 09:02

I know four human Oscars (all lovely boys), none shortened to Ozzy, one cat.

singthing · 22/03/2026 09:16

Nicknames evolve, they aren't set in advance.

What will you do if you love Ozzy so much but he gets called Lollipop or 'Nana or Racket or any of the infinite nickname possibilities which emerge as he lives and grows in the world?

If you like Ozzy, call him Ozzy. Don't call him something else and forcibly retrofit the name you actually like.

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 22/03/2026 09:18

One, he is 15/16 now.
