Paul2023 · 18/07/2026 21:43

I never met him but I knew of a guy called Wayne King. He was a union rep.

This is absolutely true by the way ! His parents must have been naive !

Firebird83 · 18/07/2026 21:44

The classic Ben Dover

When my niece started primary school they had a class photo in the local paper . One of the poor lads was called Ben Dover and i thought no that's got to be a misprint but I asked her and she said Ben was in her class.
Poor lad will be 30 now and I suspect he may have changed his name and probably gone nc with his parents.

Paul2023 · 18/07/2026 21:57

Dollymylove · 25/02/2026 23:36

I know someone called Richard Fidler.
What were his parents thinking? 🤣

There's a brilliant episode of Modern Life Is Goodish (well, all of them are), where Dave Gorman builds a fake website that purports to suggest an ideal name for your baby, based on a few personal details that you input; but in reality, it was all pre-programmed.

He did it to prank his colleague, who had the surname Fidler - and the first suggestion was Adil (as in Adil Ray) Grin

Also Smellie. Me and my friends when were were about 12, used to look through the phone book to see who we could prank . Poor Mr/Mrs Smellie were a favourite. Shouting "yuk whats that stink" and puttjng the phone down 😆 (back in the days when calls were not traceable
)

Mr Smellie was a much respected colo-rectal surgeon at the RDE in Exeter. 😉

ParsleySageToiletDuckAndBinBags · 18/07/2026 22:13

We both shared a silent chuckle and a glance at each other at a recent awards ceremony at our DS's school, when they announced a lad called Jack Hughes (think Émile Zola)!

I've heard of a few people with the surname Smellie over the years. Considering how surnames originally came about, it almost certainly meant that one of their distant ancestors did actually stink!

I also once knew somebody with the surname Lillicrap; and somebody else called Brothwell - who very pointedly pronounced the 'w'!

Electricsausages · 18/07/2026 22:18

ShanghaiDiva · 18/07/2026 22:19

One of my neighbours is called Joe King - I kid you not.
