I love love the name Esther. But I’ve been told it’s a grandma name and it sounds horrible. I have loved this name for years and it’s honestly so crushing to hear but I need honest opinions, is the name Esther bad?

It's very common in the Netherlands, although they're mostly 30-50 now. I like it. It's a lot nicer than the Ella type names.

It's not terrible or anything, but it's quite harsh and ugly-sounding. Not pretty-sounding at all, like Clarissa, for example. So I'm surprised at the number of people here pronouncing it "lovely". It sounds German and like it would belong to a sturdy old German matron with hams for arms, sleeves rolled up and kneading German dough for pumpernickel bread. 🤭 I think there are so many names which are a million times nicer.

That’s exactly what it sounds like😂 It’s not the worst name in the world (that might go to Bertha) but to my ears it’s not pretty (not that everyone wants pretty) and it would never cross my mind as a potential baby name.

This seems a popular name on here. It's not to my taste. I just think while unusual compared to names like Olivia, Sophia etc it's not as nice sounding. I also wonder if you asked school children or those in high school if they'd like to be called this name.

Great name! The first Esther, in the Old Testament, was brave and saved the Persian Jews from execution. Perhaps your Esther will be kick ass too!

I know two Esther’s one a child the other an adult. I like it but honestly what does it matter what others think. If you like it go for it. Better than some of the names I’ve come across in 30+ years of teaching.

Lovely name! People calling it a 'grandma name' are out of touch. Ignore them!

The ugliest child I know is called Esther, but the name itself is inoffensive.
