I love love the name Esther. But I’ve been told it’s a grandma name and it sounds horrible. I have loved this name for years and it’s honestly so crushing to hear but I need honest opinions, is the name Esther bad?

I like it a lot.

Crumpetdisappointment · 03/02/2026 19:58

i came across the name Esther today and thought how much i now like it
strange

Notellinganyone · 03/02/2026 20:08

It’s a great name - strong and classy. I have a Hester so am probably biased.

Emelene · 03/02/2026 20:09

I know a little Esther who is 2. I was a bit surprised when I heard it but it’s really grown on me. The Bible story of Esther is amazing.

bobby81 · 03/02/2026 20:40

I love it x

Rocknrollstar · 03/02/2026 20:57

Esther is a lovely name. She was a very brave woman who saved her people from being murdered.

user2848502016 · 03/02/2026 20:58

I love it, it’s not “old lady” at all, it’s classic

TruJay · 03/02/2026 21:24

Honestly use the name you love. It’s best to keep names to yourself as everyone loves to comment, it’s less if you just announce once baby has arrived.
I’ve had negativity on two out of three of my children’s names. I love my children’s names (obviously) and I used to get annoyed at people’s rude comments, now I just ask them what their name is and pull a face 🤣 they don’t like it when you do that.

Giraffehaver · 03/02/2026 22:29

Esther is a sparky cool name. Never met one I didn't like or admire

Nanof8 · 03/02/2026 22:34

I think it's a lovely name. I have an Esther for a neice.
I've noticed a lot of the older names are coming back.

Norastroud · 03/02/2026 22:41

I love the name Esther & it’s meaning ‘Star’
and prefer nicknames Essie or Ettie to Esti.

i know 2 Esther’s who are in their 30’s so I don’t think of it as an old fashioned same at all.

gorgeous name - good luck!

Kumquatzest · 03/02/2026 23:16

I think it's a good name! Great ancient history, lovely meaning. It's old-fashioned now but it will probably come back in style, like many other names have. My late DGM was Hester which I would love to use as a middle name for a potential DD.

ScreentimeInTheMeantime · 03/02/2026 23:55

Ah I love it! Classy and classic. I also like the PP’s suggestion of Esti as a cute nickname.

Spelling should not be too troublesome as you’re choosing a conventional spelling of a biblical name. Spellcheck might even pick up misspellings

Bowies · 04/02/2026 04:58

I like it. Had a Scottish friend called that at school. I really don’t like Hester, I think of Uncle Fester!

youllneverknow · 04/02/2026 14:15

It's my daughter's name and obviously I love it, always have. The best thing is that it's not very common so my daughter is the only one of her generation that we know. Don't take any notice of other people - they will get used to it. For what it's worth, my daughter also loves her name and she is frequently told how lovely it is by other people

Firebird83 · 04/02/2026 23:21

I love it. There are a few at my DS’s school. Esti or Essie are nice nicknames.

user1492757084 · 05/02/2026 08:24

Esther is smart and lovely.
It's well known, has interesting history but is not too popular -perfect.

Trainnner · 05/02/2026 08:26

I like it and Esty for short.

Planner2026 · 05/02/2026 08:35

Esther is a FABULOUS name!
A beautiful biblical name, like Ruth, Sarah et al.
I love Esther Walker/ Coren and she’s an Esther.
Go for it OP.

Sparklinggreen · 05/02/2026 09:23

its actually a lovely name, but does have a slight old fashioned feel. If you don’t agree/mind- go for it!

Mostly Esther is liked in Mumsnet.

However, in RL it just isn't. When I told people DD's name there would be a small gap whilst the person thought of something to say. Normally, something along the lines of how unusual. Sometimes they managed to mutter that its quite an old name. Or that it was very. .. er, biblical.

DD is 25 now. I still love her name, and don't care that others didn't like it. People that matter got used to it. She likes it too. And now she's an adult she's got over the fact that her name was never on mugs, bookmarks or stickers.

It's a popular name in Spain, so I always buy personalised things for my daughter when I go on holiday!

maddiemookins16mum · 05/02/2026 10:05

It was my second choice 20 plus years ago (mainly because of Judy Garland in Meet me in St Louis). It’s a wonderful name.

RaraRachael · 05/02/2026 10:25

Esther is a lovely name but Essie, Ettie, Esti?
Why can't MN just leave names alone.

PithyViewer · 05/02/2026 10:56

It's not terrible or anything, but it's quite harsh and ugly-sounding. Not pretty-sounding at all, like Clarissa, for example. So I'm surprised at the number of people here pronouncing it "lovely". It sounds German and like it would belong to a sturdy old German matron with hams for arms, sleeves rolled up and kneading German dough for pumpernickel bread. 🤭 I think there are so many names which are a million times nicer.
