I love love the name Esther. But I’ve been told it’s a grandma name and it sounds horrible. I have loved this name for years and it’s honestly so crushing to hear but I need honest opinions, is the name Esther bad?

It's not my choice, but it's not my child! If you want to call her that, you should!

northernplatform · 03/02/2026 17:29

it was my Grandma’s name (so yes very Grandma to me!) but I like it - If you like it go for it

Randomuser2026 · 03/02/2026 17:31

I only know one Esther aged early 40s. I love the name.

DisforDarkChocolate · 03/02/2026 17:31

I think it's lovely too.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 03/02/2026 17:36

Mostly Esther is liked in Mumsnet.

However, in RL it just isn't. When I told people DD's name there would be a small gap whilst the person thought of something to say. Normally, something along the lines of how unusual. Sometimes they managed to mutter that its quite an old name. Or that it was very. .. er, biblical.

DD is 25 now. I still love her name, and don't care that others didn't like it. People that matter got used to it. She likes it too. And now she's an adult she's got over the fact that her name was never on mugs, bookmarks or stickers.

OrangeAxolotyl · 03/02/2026 17:43

I suppose it depends where you are. In real life, where I live at least, it's well liked!
What a shame for your daughter, @Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies , it's such a beautiful, strong name.

tiredlazydoesntmatter · 03/02/2026 17:44

I love Esther . Pretty name.

Featherlemon · 03/02/2026 17:49

I would think of it as a religious name

BertieWoostersChaps · 03/02/2026 17:58

Gosh that’s one of my favourite names. I know a few, all of different ages so I think it’s pretty timeless.

Hester is awful and definitely not due a comeback!!

ginasevern · 03/02/2026 18:00

They say it's a grandma name when people are calling their kids Agnes and Ethel! Give me strength. Esther is a good, biblical name and, I'd say, timeless.

BunnyLake · 03/02/2026 18:04

No I don’t like it. No particular reason, it just wouldn't make it to my Maybe or Yes pile.

Alittlewordinyourear · 03/02/2026 18:23

I love it! My daughter now 36, met a little girl at nursery years ago and they were best friends till they emigrated to Australia. She was a kind funny and very pretty little girl and called Esther- because of that association I really like the name. She works as an equine vet in Australia and is not old fashioned in the least!

BitOutOfPractice · 03/02/2026 18:26

I love the name Esther.

Moreteaandchocolate · 03/02/2026 18:42

It’s a lovely name! One of those names where I’ve only met a couple and of totally different ages, so feels quite timeless to me

Aquamarineviolet · 03/02/2026 18:56

I know an 8 year old Esther and thought it was a perfectly normal name when she was born.

ZanyOP · 03/02/2026 18:59

It’s a very traditional name, but not particularly offensive. The issue is that you’ve asked for an opinion on a name you like. If you were to have named your child this then no one would have said a thing and politely kept quiet.

Orphlids · 03/02/2026 19:12

I really like the name. And I’ve never met a bad one. Most of the Esthers I have met have been young and rather cool. Friendly sounding name, and not at all dowdy.

I think it’s a very pretty name .

RosyDaysAhead · 03/02/2026 19:39

My 9year niece is called Esther. I didn’t like the name to begin with, but it really suits her and now I love it.

Sofado · 03/02/2026 19:43

I like it a lot. I know two young ones- aged seven and 20. It is pretty cool.

17caterpillars1mouse · 03/02/2026 19:51

I agree with pp Esther is fresh again. It's a lovely name. I know a little 3 year old Esther, she's a cool kid, bit sassy lol. Sometimes goes by Essie

HughGrantsfurrysquirrel · 03/02/2026 19:52

BowlyLarr · 03/02/2026 08:44

I think it’s lovely. She will probably have to correct people’s spelling fairly often but that’s the case with a lot of names. Go for it!

Ah well ..... . That's Life!! 😄

Fairyvocals · 03/02/2026 19:53

I have a Hester, named after my grandmother, Esther. DD gets called Esther a lot, because it’s a more familiar name to many people, but that’s fine.

I love Esther, it makes me think of Bleak House.
