A Welsh middle name for Alice

Another thread from me! Please help me decide on a Welsh middle name

I would def go for Alys over Alice

def not Seren because the two S’s run into each other

Bronwen and Dilys are proper Welsh names. They’re beautiful, traditional and the pronunciation is obvious.

@dontletmedownbruce , I'm not sure they are traditional. Dilys is a virtue name and I think it was only popular in the 1st half of the 20th century. Branwen is traditional but Bronwen is more common.

Spelling and pronunciation isn't much of an issue with middle names. Both of those are likely to be misspelt (Bronwyn and Dylis). They're proper Welsh names but so was OP's list. They are both great-grannyish.

Mali - Most of us know it from Sali Mali, which has been around since the 1960s. Names like Mali are in my family tree.

Mabli sounds similarly ‘new’ and is a bit too close to Chablis. - new to you. I think it's from the Mabinogion.

Angharad - I know lots of Angharads or Something Angharads. I also know a lot of Eleris or Something Eleris. Names get a bit meh when you know so many of them. It doesn't help that both of the names get 'anglicised'. (I dislike Ann Harrud and El-airy**)

Alys Nia is gorgeous. Or Alice. Nia gets my vote, it's lovely.

Hands down, Mabli for me. I LOVE this name so much.

I am Welsh but live in Europe and both of my DD's have names I chose, but Mabli was vetoed - which I understood.

@Relaxd , bad spelling of Bronwen. The -wyn is masculine.

I love Seren but the two S sounds aren't good together.
Alice Eleri = Ali celery - not good.

Like PP I love the Welsh spelling Alys. I quite like a double A: Alice Angharad

@Jugendstiel , Eleri doesn't rhyme with celery. It rhymes with Kerry. It's El-ERR-y.

** There's a character called Eleri on Pobol y Cwm. All the characters, including Eleri, apart from Dani say it as El-erry.
There's also a minor character called Eleri on Rownd a Rownd, and she's El-erry too.

Alice Arwen!

That’s not how Eleri is pronounced - it doesn’t rhyme with celery

@stample , Arwen is from Lord of the Rings.

My thoughts too. I like Seren, but think a one syllable middle name would flow better. Sian was my first thought :)

@Ritasueandbobtoo9 , I think that was an autocorrect but Cariad is one of:

It's probably said as 'Carry-ad - it's Welsh for Love' by the proud parents. (It's pronounced 'CARR-yad')

All of those would go with Alys, and most would be easy enough for non-Welsh speakers

Erwain? Not seen or heard that before not even as a word. Would get said as Ur-wayne.

I know more than one Ceri who says it gets mispronounced. (Serry, Cherry, Cherie)

Eirian - gets said as Erry-un.

Lowri is lovely but gets said as Lowry like the painter.

Non - lovely but not sure it would work. Alice Non Bumble?
