Another thread from me! Please help me decide on a Welsh middle name

Yseult? I really like Seren but think it would be better as Seren Alys/Alice. Anghara Alice or Alice Nia also work

DanDin · 15/01/2026 14:15

Yseult isn't Welsh @Londonmummy66 . The Welsh form is Esyllt, which is lovely.

Other suggestions:
Menai
Elliw
Heulwen

DanDin · 15/01/2026 14:41

More suggestions: Llywela, Buddug, Morfydd, Dyddgu, Gaenor, Sioned, Mair/Meira

If you have links to somewhere that has a pretty river name, you could use that as a middle name.

Seasonal middle names: Haf, Mai, Medi, Hefin (boy's name but might work as a middle name)

MinnieMountain · 15/01/2026 14:44

Nansi.

ginasevern · 15/01/2026 14:47

I love the name Mair (Welsh for Mary) pronounce My-a. I think that would work well. Bronwen or Angharad would work well too. I also agree with spelling Alice as Alys if you want to go full Welsh.

DanDin · 15/01/2026 14:49

@ginasevern , Mair is not pronounced My-a. It's like Myra without the a.

Sorry yes it is, I missed the "r" out!

CJones11 · 15/01/2026 14:53

I can't see your list but I think these pair well

Alice Mair
Alice Gwen
Alice Catrin

I'd possibly consider the Welsh spelling of Alys too.

Kaaardiffgalnow · 15/01/2026 14:53

I'd go for a single syllable name - Mai, Mair or Haf . Have you considered the Welsh spelling - Alys ?

KitKatKrums · 15/01/2026 14:58

Savoretti · 14/01/2026 21:11

Alice Eleri sounds like Celery

If you pronounce it to rhyme with Celery you’re saying it wrong. Eleri is pronounced El-AIR-y.

TheBlueRobin · 15/01/2026 15:58

Alice has two syllables and most suggestions have two syllables so I'd go for something that has one (Gwen, Nia, Sian) or three (Eleri, Ceriab, Angharad).

Your suggestions are nice! My friend named her baby Mabli and I think it's gorgeous.

Cocktailsandcheese · 15/01/2026 16:07

I voted for Erin because I love that name. However I agree with some others that Alice Ffion sounds lovely.

DanDin · 15/01/2026 18:36

@TheBlueRobin , Nia is 2 syllables.

@ginasevern , it's My with a R at the end. One syllable.

@KitKatKrums , Eleri is pronounced El-ERR-y. Rhymes with Ceri/Kerry.

DanDin · 15/01/2026 18:41

Alice Ffion does sound nice. I haven't suggested some names I like (Annest, Nest, Tesni, Betsan ... ) because of the ss sound being in Alice, but middle names aren't used much.

Alys Mallt is nice.

Spidey66 · 15/01/2026 18:51

I love the name Rhiannon, but out of the options I like Seren best.

I love Myfanwy but I think it’s considered quite dated now?

I was going to suggest Myfanwy too!

It hasn't been much used in the last 85 or so years.
I can think of 3 who are younger than that, but 2 of them are of partly Welsh heritage. One of them insists it's pronounced Miff-ann-way. Sad

LolaBumble · 16/01/2026 11:11

Thank you all!! Given me a lot to think about. Think the suggestions of a one syllable middle name are good. Perhaps Mai or Fflur… Ffion is my absolute fave but my eldest’s name haha xx

OP posts:
maras2 · 16/01/2026 11:14

I think that 2 A's sounds good'
Alice Angharad.

DanDin · 16/01/2026 13:51

I wouldn't use Mai because it is like May - overused as a middle name.

Single syllable names I can think of:
Siân
Mai
Haf
Mair
Mallt
Gwen
Gwawr
Glain
Nest
Non
Fflur
Ffraid
Grug
Swyn

Unisex:
Wyn
Gwyn
Glyn
Gwern
Llwyd
Rhys
Prys
Clwyd
Hedd

** most of the unisex ones are boys' names but could be used as middle names

LolaBumble · 17/01/2026 13:06

Actually the suggestion of Nia is growing on me! Alice Nia? 🤔 I feel like that goes

OP posts:
DanDin · 17/01/2026 13:10

Try saying it out loud with the surname. @LolaBumble .
Alice Bumble, Alice Nia Bumble, Alice N. Bumble, A. N. Bumble, ANB.

dontletmedownbruce · 17/01/2026 13:30

Angharad goes nicely with Alice.

The options in your poll don’t seem very Welsh to me.

DanDin · 17/01/2026 13:38

@dontletmedownbruce , other than Erin they are all Welsh.
Seren - Welsh for 'Star'
Mali - Welsh equivalent of Molly
Eleri - Welsh equivalent of Hilary
Mabli - Welsh equivalent of Mabel

All are popular as first names.

dontletmedownbruce · 17/01/2026 13:50

Seren, (yes, ‘for star’ if you’re into that), is hugely popular everywhere.

There have been abundant Erins moving through high schools in the last ten years. Both Erin and Seren became peak fashion names about a generation ago.

Mali, to me, is a country in Africa 🇲🇱. If it’s now been commandeered as a name, then it’s certainly not a traditional one.

Mabli sounds similarly ‘new’ and is a bit too close to Chablis.
