Could Kit be short for anything other than Christopher?

This is just musings, not for a real baby.

I quite like the nickname Kit but I really don’t like Christopher.

Is there any other name anyone can think of that it could reasonably be short for?
How do people feel about Kit as a full name?

Again, this is just for a potential future son. I am not pregnant with a boy currently.

I know someone called Kit, and that literally is his names it's not shortened or a nickname.

If you like Kit and don't like Christopher then I'd just use Kit OP. Personally I wouldn't use Kester as it makes me think of keister (butt) and that bit from Home Alone.

BoleynMemories13 · 31/12/2025 13:11

Personally I would only use it as a short form of Christopher, as other longer versions just seem contrived. However, if you really don't like Christopher there are no laws against using Kit as a stand alone name. It's not far out of the top 100 now as just that, so plenty of people do.

If people register kids as just Albie, Ronnie, Jax, Lottie, Frankie etc now, there's no reason why you can't have a Kit who is just Kit.

Lins77 · 31/12/2025 13:14

I'd've said Christian, but probably too similar to Christopher if you don't like that.

Notmyreality · 31/12/2025 13:16

You mean like the car in Knight Rider?

FortnumsWeddingBreakfastTeaPlease · 31/12/2025 13:17

That's all I think of too. The talking car from Knight Rider

BillieWiper · 31/12/2025 13:17

The one I know is just Kit. That's his full name. I didn't even know it was meant to be related to Christopher. I guess if that's the case then Christian?

I like it just as a standalone name.

SheelaNaGigYouExhibitionist · 31/12/2025 13:18

I can't think of anything else obvious. But I have a female friend, Kit, real name Karen.

msbevvy · 31/12/2025 13:24

It could work for a girl as well. The only Kit that I have known was my Aunty Kit, real name Kathleen.

maras2 · 31/12/2025 13:27

I have an Indian friend called Kirit who his family call Kit.

Kester

The hero or sometimes anti hero of a few Susan Howatch's novels.

MylipstickiscalledHugMe · 31/12/2025 13:30

I also know a just-Kit boy. And a friend Catherine who liked to be called Kit for a while

Lemonlimonade · 31/12/2025 14:14

I think Chris is the natural shortening for Christopher. It’s also a pain to have a different initial for your nickname.

Kit could be short got Kester, Kirit or Kitten.

Disco2022 · 31/12/2025 14:45

My son is Kit, standalone.

TheCurious0range · 31/12/2025 14:48

Some of these aren't even names! Kitterick, rocket, kitten......

Kit is short for Christopher OP and if you really don't like it just use Kit.

Lemonlimonade · 31/12/2025 15:19

Chris is the most intuitive and natural shortening for Christopher. Or Topher!
