Could Kit be short for anything other than Christopher?

This is just musings, not for a real baby.

I quite like the nickname Kit but I really don’t like Christopher.

Is there any other name anyone can think of that it could reasonably be short for?
How do people feel about Kit as a full name?

Again, this is just for a potential future son. I am not pregnant with a boy currently.

OccasionalHope · 31/12/2025 22:27

Christian

Or a girl called Katherine

topcat2014 · 31/12/2025 22:28

I never knew Kit was short for Christopher

tizzy13 · 31/12/2025 22:30

There was a child in my sons class called Kittow

EverardDeTroyes · 31/12/2025 22:31

Kitto (Cornish) but I'm not sure that is much different to Kit. I would just use Kit myself.

I had an aunt known as Kit, short for Kathleen.

NerrSnerr · 31/12/2025 23:39

Just call him ‘Kit’. We have a Christopher and he’s firmly called ‘Chrissy’ by all his friends.

Atticus!

Surely that would be Tic?!

PhantomOfAllKnowledge · 31/12/2025 23:43

Christophe if you want to go French or Kristoff which I think is an East European version of the name.

BuffaloCauliflower · 31/12/2025 23:44

I know a Kitt who is just Kitt, not short for anything. I think it works fine standalone.

FortnumsWeddingBreakfastTeaPlease · 01/01/2026 00:11

Isn't one of Katie Price's kids called Kit?

Oneforallandallforone · 01/01/2026 00:14

I'd just use Kit too. Its a very cool name unlike Christopher. Would worry some people would end up calling him Chris or Christy anyway.

isargosaword · 01/01/2026 00:49

Could just be used on its own- Wayne and Coleen Rooneys son is Kit, and not short for anything afaik

MungoforPresident · 01/01/2026 00:51

Kit can also be Catherine! Kitty. Kit. Cat.

MirandaBlu · 01/01/2026 00:58

IME, there's a cultural divide: Kit in the UK is usually short for Christoper or Christian, sometimes via other forms like the Cornish Kitto. Kit in the USA is most often short for Katharine, Catherine, Kathleen, etc. Do what you're comfortable doing.

ByeChristmas · 01/01/2026 01:11

If he was something like
‘Kevin Ian Thomas’ he could be called Kit.

Me neither! Chris or Christy are the most intuitive short forms.

Im not keen on Kit. Don’t people say ‘take your kit off’?

None of those is an actual name though ?

I know a Kit/Kitty - short for Katharine.
