Tasmin

DH has just suggested this name. We were joking about having a whirling dervish child with the nn Taz and he said Tasmin.
I checked it was a real name and we both really like it.
Tamsin doesnt have the same appeal as we both know Tammys who are quite wet...sorry if you are or have got a Tammy!
What do you think?

Tasmin is a known name and it benefits from being both lovely and unusual. I really don’t think that any confusion with Tamsin would be the huge deal others are suggesting. It also reminded me of Tasmin Archer.

FrenchBunionSoup · 24/12/2025 05:25

I do strongly associate it with Tasmin Archer but that's not a bad association if you see know what I mean. She was a bit of a one hit wonder and never did anything controversial. I quite like it, although she would have to spend her life correcting people who misread it.

Roserunner · 24/12/2025 05:35

I think it's a lovely name and love Taz for short. I have come across name before as I have Iranian friends and believe the name has Persian/Arabic origins.

RosesAndHellebores · 24/12/2025 05:42

The name's fine, albeit not to my taste. However, I think your dd will likely find it irksome to keep saying "er no, not Tamsin, Tasmin, that's T. A. S. M. I. N.

fashionqueen0123 · 23/12/2025 23:43

I read it as Tamsin.

Tasmin makes me think of Tasmania. Or a typo for Tamsin. I think you’d just have people getting it wrong all the time tbh!

Yeah this as well as the Tasmanian devil.

Tryingatleast · 24/12/2025 05:50

I really like Tasmin, don’t like tamsin and think Yasmin is only for Disney characters!!

Okthenguys · 24/12/2025 05:50

Tasmin is a relatively common name - just not in the UK where I presume OP is from. I like it, it is beautiful sounding. As an aside I don’t understand some people’s preoccupation with potentially having to spend a lifetime correcting how a name is pronounced or spelled. It almost never happens - I have an “uncommon” name - and on the occasions it does it’s usually a brief non-event. Name your child whatever you want.

IstillloveKingThistle · 24/12/2025 05:50

Yeah this as well as the Tasmanian devil.

Same!

MrsMoastyToasty · 24/12/2025 08:28

What about Thomasin or Thomasina?

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/12/2025 08:30

KnickerlessParsons · 23/12/2025 23:40

It’s Tamsin, not Tasmin.
Tamsin is lovely.

This.
If you call her Tasmin people will think you've spelled it wrong.

Elopeme · 24/12/2025 08:32

Tasmin is definitely a name!

Paaseitjes · 24/12/2025 08:47

Tasmina is Persian and looks less like Tamsin so might avoid spelling mistakes. For what is worth, MN hates all none middle of the road names. I have my baby an unusual but ancient name. MN hated it. And to be fair I do have to spell and explain it every time because it's similar to a couple of other name, a bit like Jasmin/Tasmin/Tamsin.

Egglio · 24/12/2025 08:53

I'm a Tamsin, and in my experience people are very well versed with checking if I am a Tamsin or a Tasmin. I don't think Tasmin is a very unusual name at all!

Owly11 · 24/12/2025 08:55

People would get it wrong all the time - very annoying for your daughter for the rest of her life.

Pranksters · 24/12/2025 03:45

Tasmin is a name.

This thread is so weird.

It's quite an obscure name

I think people are just demonstrating the point that the kid is going to spend her life saying 'no not Tamsin, Tasmin' which may get a little old.

SkalengeckOrSiegbarste · 24/12/2025 09:11

At school I had a friend called Tasnim and also had a friend called Tasnim (Tas-neem) which is another nice name.
I think Tasnim is a lovely name! If you like it, go for it!

user1492757084 · 24/12/2025 09:30

I know a man called Tasman. Great name.

For a girl .. Tasma, Tasmin, Tasmina, Thomasina.
All lovely names.

ineedhelp37 · 24/12/2025 09:41

nn Tazzie is cute

NCfor24 · 24/12/2025 09:48

Tasmin Archer was on TOTP2 last night which is where I assumed this post had come from but just coincidence.
I think Tasmina sounds like less of a wrong pronunciation of Tamsin. Also gives Tas and Mina/Meena as nicknames, and sounds prettier to me if your daughter is less of the whirling dervish and more stereotypically girly.
Either way Tasmin is a name and I've never heard it used apart from the singer mentioned.
Ultimately people will mishear and misspell names regardless. I've had to spell my names all my life. It's fine.

What do you think?

Tasmin (or Tasmeen) is a beautiful baby name, I wouldn’t use it because it’s not from my culture but is very distinct from Tamsin and has a whole different cultural significance.

I know you don’t like Tamsin, not trying to convince you otherwise, but I know two women Tamsin and both of them are strong women, the name doesn’t come across wet to me at all.

evtheria · 24/12/2025 09:54

Much prefer Tamsin, plus think child will be forever correcting people “it’s actually Tasmin like Jasmine/Yasmin”
I also dislike Taz as a nickname, but obv it’s not mine!

underthethree · 24/12/2025 09:56

I love it!

and I think this thread turn a weird turn very quickly with people trying to says “it’s Tamsin” … like it’s not?? That’s a completely different name than the one the OP is asking about? Very strange thread 😅

DuchessOfNarcissex · 24/12/2025 10:06

I know a Tasneem.
Tasmania is named after Dutch explorer Abel Tasman

Ohitsatiara · 24/12/2025 10:09

I know a Tazmin. Don't know any Tamsins but seeing as everyone on here knows loads I just went to check that Taz really is called Tazmin and that I've not been calling her by the wrong name all her life. 😂

romdowa · 24/12/2025 10:11

Everyone for her whole life will just call her Tamsin, theyll presume what they are reading is a typo or you cant spell
