Tasmin

DH has just suggested this name. We were joking about having a whirling dervish child with the nn Taz and he said Tasmin.
I checked it was a real name and we both really like it.
Tamsin doesnt have the same appeal as we both know Tammys who are quite wet...sorry if you are or have got a Tammy!
What do you think?

I own a Tasmin and I can vouch that most people will hear Tamsin I have lost count of how many times this has happened. My Dd even had her school label printed incorrectly when she joined one school
It is very much a name the comments that it is not are strange and probably by people not old enough to remember Tasmin Archer which I unfortunately am
My Dd is a young adult now so we have lived with it for over 20 years , never met another one in real life but did meet someone in Argos once whose granddaughter was called it and she almost joined a sixth form with one in the year so they are around
The Australians love it because of Tasmania and when we visited there she got a lot of comments about her name
My Dd is quite happy with her name she has a very popular middle name so could have switched to that if she liked . She usually goes by Taz but has been Tazzy too for while

HarryVanderspeigle · 24/12/2025 10:56

I knew one once and didn't see people constantly getting it wrong. I have a common as muck name and people still mishear me all the time eg Hannah/Anna. It's a lovely name, so go for it.

Reevester · 24/12/2025 11:40

I know a Tasmin. Has always gone by Taz. Didn’t actually realise that was her full name until many years after meeting. It is a real name. I had never heard of Tamsin.

grinchmcgrinchface · 24/12/2025 11:42

That is my name, don’t use it. I bloody hate it - nobody can ever spell it correctly. Wish my parents had used a nicer name.

DinoDances · 24/12/2025 12:31

Something about it just doesn't roll off the tongue for me, I think because it's quite a few harsh sounds in a row. I like Tasmina better that someone else suggested.

If you wanted more options, you could name her just a T name and call her Taz though, like Caroline becomes Caz. Thalia, Tara, Theodora, even Anastasia or Natasha might work. But if you love it use it of course.

dailyconniptions · 24/12/2025 15:14

Tamsin is a gorgeous name.
Tasmin is not nice.

Joeninety · 24/12/2025 15:17

Sounds like a British sports car from the 80's.

Baital · 24/12/2025 15:27

If you use a connected name - Tamsin, Jasmine etc - you will know the reason and it will still be a lovely story for your DD about how you chose her name.

Having to constantly correct people would be a bit annoying for me.

Ketzele · 24/12/2025 15:28

I was at school with a Tasmin. I like it. And Tasmin Archer was very cool.

greenwich23 · 24/12/2025 15:38

Don’t let MN decide for you @Giraffehaver . I’ve known a few people called Tasmin and never met a Tamsin myself.

I know Tasmins nm Tazzy and Tamsins nm Tammy

both are really lovely names

reallyalurker · 24/12/2025 22:58

I hadn't heard of it but think it's pretty. It is uncommon in the UK - see Darkgreener, no uses in 2024. Tamsin is also uncommon for new births - 10 in 2024.

It makes me think of the Tasmanian devil - I don’t like it it’s harsh sounding and also sounds dated. I’m not keen on Tamsin either.

Yes!

CapybarasAreJustGuineaBigs · 24/12/2025 23:02

I've got a friend called Tarryn who gets called Taz, if you want a slightly less out there/easily misread alternative. I think Tasmin would be in for a lifetime of saying Tasmin-not-Tamsin tbh...

Calliopespa · 27/12/2025 01:18

I've only heard of Tasman who was an explorer and the Tasman Ocean ( and Tasmania and Tasmanian Devils) are named after him.

I have heard of Tamsin.

If I have come across Tasmin I must have thought it was Tamsin and not noticed.

omggggggg · 27/12/2025 01:29

Awful

WinterCarlisle · 27/12/2025 01:37

I love Tasmin and prefer it to Tamsin. Also a fan of Sleeping Satellite

ZenLikeAlways · 27/12/2025 05:39

Do you mean Tamsin?

ZenLikeAlways · 27/12/2025 05:46

Tryingatleast · 24/12/2025 05:50

I really like Tasmin, don’t like tamsin and think Yasmin is only for Disney characters!!

Yasmin is much nicer than Tamsin or Tasmin imo.

OtterlyAstounding · 27/12/2025 07:09

I'm not a fan of unnecessary alternate spellings but in this case I'd probably go with 'Tazmin' instead of 'Tasmin', just to make it very clear it's not 'Tamsin'.

watermybegonias · 27/12/2025 07:49

I think the child will spend her whole life correcting people.

DoingAway · 27/12/2025 07:53

I agree that you will be saddling her with constantly having to correct people

SharonEllis · 27/12/2025 07:58

I used to know a Tasmin, she was called Taz for short. Of course its a proper name & much nicer than Tamsin. Go for it if you like it!
