Hello,

I'm not pregnant, but we are TTC #3 soon so have started to compile name lists.

I've been through the top 2,000 names and have shortlisted these as my favourites.

Gilbert (Bertie)
Hubert (Hugh/Bertie)
Herbert (Herbie/Bertie)
Arlo
Ernest (Ernie)
Hector
Otto
Angus
Ivo
Barnaby
Milo
Raphael/Rafael (which spelling do you prefer?)

Surname is Scott.

I look forward to reading your responses.

Thanks!

honestly?

ButterflyMcQueen · 06/06/2008 22:27

lovely list - Hubert is fab

lljkk · 06/06/2008 22:30

I most like Gilbert, Ernest and Raphael. Don't warm to the rest, personally. Hugh (Huw) on its own is good, mind.

Jojay · 06/06/2008 22:31

Noooooo - sorry

SlartyBartFast · 06/06/2008 22:32

hubert - hugh
and angus
my preferences out of your list

micci25 · 06/06/2008 22:32

dont really like any of them but if i had to pick id chose Raphael. if you want old fashioned sounding names what about george or james?

tortoiseSHELL · 06/06/2008 22:35

Gilbert (Bertie) - yes, very Anne of Green Gables!
Hubert (Hugh/Bertie) - no, is Colonel from the Boer War
Herbert (Herbie/Bertie) - no, is car
Arlo - ? Is this a name
Ernest (Ernie) - yes, surprisingly nice!
Hector - I like it, but for a rabbit
Otto - not if you're not German, and definitely not with Scott!
Angus - lovely
Ivo - prefer Ivan
Barnaby - nice
Milo - like it, but Tweenies
Raphael/Rafael (which spelling do you prefer?) - love it, Raphael, not with an f. Like Raffa for short.

CantSleepWontSleep · 06/06/2008 22:35

Barnaby
Hector
Otto (though poss too many 't's with your surname too).

Love those, but not keen on the others.

minniedot · 06/06/2008 22:46

Love them all apart from Ernest and Ivo.

Heated · 06/06/2008 22:49

I love Angus, fab name.

I like Hugh, Huw, Hugo but Hubert/Herbert for some reason is comical. Gilbert nice.

Ernest is still too old man.

Otto..hmm...ok so von Bismarck does comes to mind but if it wasn't for him, I'd like the name a lot, maybe it's the new take on Ivo which I see you like as well. Arlo no.

Rafael is nice & prefer this spelling, more masc imo.

Barnaby & Milo I find twee.

Quattrocento · 06/06/2008 22:49

I love Hector. Milo is fab too but the tweenie association is a bit unfortunate. Raphael is a bit too turtly for me. Definitely Hector. Or Angus. Angus is nice too. Ooh Barnaby. I like Barnaby.

If you go for Otto his middle name should definitely be Von

SquiffyHock · 06/06/2008 22:49

My maiden name was Scott - some male relatives are;
John
Raymond
James
Frank (Francis)
Derek
Phillip
Peter
Desmond
I could go on!

This seemed like a good idea but I'm guessing that none of them will be up your street...

I love Hector. DD was known as Hector in utero - would never have been Hector (even if a boy !) as it didn't go with our surname but I love it.

LuckySalem · 06/06/2008 22:54

Ok opinion

Gilbert (Bertie) (no, it's too old sounding)
Hubert (Hugh/Bertie) (Hugh I like, not liking Hubert though)
Herbert (Herbie/Bertie) (no - herbie the car)
Arlo (no, sorry I wouldn't)
Ernest (Ernie) (Bert & Ernie anyone)
Hector (seems ok, but you know it'll be shortened to Hec)
Otto (This reminds me of something and I can't think what it is, but its giving me bad memories)
Angus (Is very Scottish, which will suit if you are)
Ivo (Doesn't seem like a name)
Barnaby (Again reminds me of soemthing)
Milo (seems nice)
Raphael/Rafael (which spelling do you prefer?) - Prefer with the ph, and I like this

yelnats · 06/06/2008 22:58

Sorry but I dont like any of them.

furrycat · 06/06/2008 23:00

Let's hope it's a girl then

puffling · 06/06/2008 23:02

Gilbert sounds best with the surname

Heathcliffscathy · 06/06/2008 23:04

Arlo.

gorgeous name.

Brightfield · 06/06/2008 23:07

Thanks for the comments so far - good and bad!

I find girls' names really hard. The only name I like is Mabel. I need to find more that I like enough to use..

Gilbert (Bertie) - No, green gilberts are what you have up your nose.
Hubert (Hugh/Bertie)- No, old man's name
Herbert (Herbie/Bertie)- Ditto
Arlo - Guthrie
Ernest (Ernie) - Aka Benny Hill
Hector - No, old man's name
Otto - Scotto
AngussssssScott
Ivo - Stick
Barnaby - the least bad name
Milo - is a drink
Raphael/Rafael (which spelling do you prefer?) - okish but....

MrsWeasley · 06/06/2008 23:25

Love Barnaby

hester · 06/06/2008 23:29

Tbh, not keen on any except Raphael/Rafael.

But MABEL - now you're talking! Have you seen the old codger name thread running at the moment? There's some brilliant girls' names on there.

AbbeyA · 06/06/2008 23:29

I dislike them all. Barnaby is the best of the bunch.

ravenAK · 06/06/2008 23:30

Go with Gilbert!

You obviously like Bertie, so that'll work, & he can be Gil if he prefers.

Ernest also due a comeback.

Barnaby/Milo/Raphael all a bit, well, poncetastic...

(What do I know, I've just called dd2 Mathilda in the hopes that it'd be unusual - MN is positively hopping with little Mat(h)ildas! )
