Hello,

I'm not pregnant, but we are TTC #3 soon so have started to compile name lists.

I've been through the top 2,000 names and have shortlisted these as my favourites.

Gilbert (Bertie)
Hubert (Hugh/Bertie)
Herbert (Herbie/Bertie)
Arlo
Ernest (Ernie)
Hector
Otto
Angus
Ivo
Barnaby
Milo
Raphael/Rafael (which spelling do you prefer?)

Surname is Scott.

I look forward to reading your responses.

Thanks!

You're not even TTC yet and are already compiling lists?

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 06/06/2008 23:35

Arlo is the best of the bunch, Barnaby very much the worst, rest on a continuum between.

EachPeachPearMum · 06/06/2008 23:37

I love Hector and Milo

AbbeyA · 06/06/2008 23:50

Hopefully Ernest will never ever make a comeback! I did a double take when a small DC was called Hector in the supermarket yesterday-I felt sorry for him!

RainyWednesday · 07/06/2008 00:11

Like: Gilbert and Milo; also Raphael but don't think it goes with Scott.

Not fussed: Arlo, Otto, Angus, Ivo; Barnaby is okay but I dislike the two I know!

Don't like: Hubert, Herbet, Ernest, Hector.

Tinker · 07/06/2008 01:19

I like Hector and Raffa but only when messing about on a baby names thread. Would inflict none of your list on a real-life baby.

AbstractMouse · 07/06/2008 01:31

I like Hector, but it wouldn't be on my list iyswim. I would look further than the top 2000 names tbh.

S1ur · 07/06/2008 01:36

Kay....

better ways to search for names than top 2000 because they also include cultural or family names etc.

I would just look through books/sites.

But if that's the kind of thing you like I think you should eb asking...

"I want an unusaul tradtional sounding/older name for a boy suggestions?"

Personally I think the ones you've selected could be improved. Consider other kids at secondary school, him at work etc.

But hold on if your ttc does that mean your decided about girls name just not sure about boys?

Comerscroft · 07/06/2008 07:59

Ernest --- Ernie Wise, Ernie the milkman, Ern/Urn.

Angus will be shortened to Gus/Gussie---makes me think of 'gusset'

Gilbert--- shortened to Gil/Gillie so more like a girl's name

Hubert---wasn't he the wimp in the 'Just William' books?

Sorry.

yomellamoHelly · 07/06/2008 08:15

I think we've got different tastes in names! I know an Otto, but he always makes me think of the Fish out of Water story. Milo makes me think of the Tweenies. Sounds like you really want a Bertie so why not Albert too?

ButterflyMcQueen · 07/06/2008 10:22

odd reactions on this thread 'inflict' is a bit strong and 'consider secondary school'

ime my secondary school aged kids know children with bizarre names and love it! it is a misnoma all this poor them they will be bullied - this is not the 70;s

i ,for one, like this list more than most - the op asked for opinions on names not comments on the damage she will
l do to her chid if she gives him one

VictorianSqualor · 07/06/2008 10:25

I like Bertie lots, it's cute.
Why not Robert though?

Names like Gilbert/Hubert/Herbet/Cuthbert are not going to be the best names when he gets older, but something more like Robert he can tailor to how he wants to be known when grown up.

Hulababy · 07/06/2008 21:23

Not keen on any of them particularly, sorry.

squanderedzeitgeist · 08/06/2008 02:10

Like most of them - particulalry Hector

xlr8 · 08/06/2008 02:25

Sorry, but I don't like them except for Raphael.

mslucy · 08/06/2008 18:30

I have an Angus so I'm biased.

Everyone always says "what a lovely name" although I do cringe slightly when I walk past those Burger King promotions!

I like:

Stan
Seth
Ferdie
Archie (although so popular these days)
Elliot
Jago
Victor
Dexter

cameroonmama · 08/06/2008 18:31

We have a Barnaby. It really suits him, rarely meet another. Noone raises an eyebrow (at least not to our faces ) My only complaint is that it is quite long when you are yelling for him in the park

wotulookinat · 08/06/2008 18:42

Erm, are you joking?

MsDemeanor · 08/06/2008 18:43

Hubert reminds me of Pubert, the baby in the Adams Family movies.
Hugh is fine though.
Herbert is spotty.
All others OK. Gilbert is unusual because unfashionable, but nothing wrong with that, and Gil is a cool short form.

FrannyandZooey · 08/06/2008 18:47

I think you'd like my thread on "slightly arty boys names" which was ENORMOUSLY long and I did eventually pick one (although am keeping it quiet for a few more weeks)

if you search for my name and arty boys it should come up
or Boco and 'wilf' as she insisted I had to choose

as for this thread, don't people get a bit scaredycat about something slightly unusual? Your names are not particularly outre I wouldn't have said

FrannyandZooey · 08/06/2008 18:47

oh and Gilbert is coming back into vogue IME

WelliesAndPyjamas · 08/06/2008 18:52

Gilbert (Bertie) - no
Hubert (Hugh/Bertie) - so-so
Herbert (Herbie/Bertie) - so-so
Arlo - no
Ernest (Ernie) - no
Hector - no
Otto - no way
Angus - yes
Ivo - no
Barnaby - so-so
Milo - no
Raphael/Rafael (which spelling do you prefer?) - so-so (2nd spelling)

cameroonmama · 08/06/2008 18:53

F&Z I am with you, I don't even think these names are particularly unusual, just not 'fashionable' at the moment. Gil is very cool.

Doobydoo · 08/06/2008 18:55

FWIW...Like em all.Particularly Arlo and Milo.I have a Milo and funnily enough he isn't a tweeny or a drink and we are mot poncetastic

Brightfield · 08/06/2008 19:08

Wow, I'm surprised at how many find these names offensive. I've always been pretty set on Barnaby Milo but am trying to keep my options open. I would happily use any on the list though, but I simply adore the name Barnaby and it has a similar feel to my other boys' names.

Thanks F&Z, will do a search for the thread.
