So we both agree to only pick 2 names,
DH suggestions are : Carter and James.
While mines are Diane and Jane.
We are expecting a little girl. So his choices are a bit stupid to me.

Any thoughts

James - Jamie, Janie, Julia (Jules), Juno?

If he is looking for unisex then maybe Charley, Taylor, Riley??

Personally I much prefer Jane (lovely, underused, will be popular again) and Diane. But I love Diana.

I can't be enthused by Emily. It's a lovely name but I've known so many little ones. There is also nothing wrong with Carla, I don't really have any feelings towards it in any direction.

As a younger woman (22) I would honestly rather be named Carter or James than Jane or Diane.

These names are way too old fashioned, and not in a good way.

Boy names for girls are actually on the rise and way more accepted than either of your options.

I’d pick one of his or do a whole new rethink.

@CubanPete , when I was 22, names like Lily, Ivy, Arthur, Archie and Elsie were really dated in a bad way. Fashions change.

Carter and James will be assumed to be boys.

I’m not sure how old you are, but I feel like Lily has always been ‘in fashion’ - my mum has friends named Lily, I have friends named Lily, and my niece has friends named Lily at school.

However I agree with Elsie and Arthur, they only came back round again recently.

Diane and Jane aren’t there yet - it’s too soon for them. They’re still ‘mum’ names. I think maybe in the next 20 years they’ll come back in fashion, but we’re not there yet (in my opinion of course).

And yes, I would rather have a boys name (which is arguably cool) than a dated name which will be the name of her peers grandmas.

@CubanPete , the link shows the popularity since 1904.

I’m curious as to how old you are/where you live generally speaking ( not asking for your postcode!), I’ve never met a Lily even close to my own age. Don’t think I’ve met one older than 15.

My grandmother (87), thinks of it as being “an old lady name” because it was a common name for old women when she was young. She has only recently reluctantly accepted that her own name is now considered an old lady name 😂

Emanwenym · 07/11/2025 21:14

@SemperIdem ,the user who said it's always been popular says she's 22. (2003 birth?). Her DM might be as young as 40. I'm older than 40.

I think Lily started to get used again on the 1980s, and back in the top 100 in the 1990s.

I'm not entirely convinced this thread is not a wind-up but I like Jane, Emily and Carla. I know James has been used for girls very occasionally, but I like it better as a boys' name and I think it would just cause a lot of confusion of used for a girl. And Carter is just not my style, and slightly makes me think of horses. Diane feels a bit dated and not quite ready to come around again.

Stuckinhospital · 08/11/2025 13:39

Well thanks OP I now have Johnny cash in my head.

Jane is a beautiful name and my favourite from your list.
Carla and Emily are sweet,.

James and Carter are not nice options for a girl.

Others ..
Lindsey
Camilla
Jamima
Allegra

XWKD · 09/11/2025 11:22

I'd prefer Diana, but the name has too much baggage now. Jane is a beautiful name.

Carter is a surname. James for a girl? No from me.

Emanwenym · 09/11/2025 11:40

Diana will not have baggage to the young of today.

Firebird83 · 09/11/2025 22:16

I like Jane. Janie is very cute.

mathanxiety · 09/11/2025 23:54

Your H needs to give his head a wobble.

Jane is a lovely name.

Cuppa1 · 10/11/2025 01:10

His names are awful. Yours are both good. Jane is nice and similar to James but actually a girls name!

Peternell · 10/11/2025 01:43

Jane and Emily are both lovely names. Diana is also good, but as others have said, Diane feels dated. Carla is okay. I think Cara is better.
Please don't use Carter or James for a girl.
