Feminine Sounding Boys Names

I am a ‘frilly’ name person, I mostly like three syllable names and two middle names to match mine and DH’s. I have such an easier time with girls names, my girls list is close to a hundred names I would use but it’s so hard to find boys names I even like.

Lots of people on here seem to hate the boys names I like, calling them ‘wet’ or ‘feminine’ (as an insult?!) and assuming they’re going to get bullied- in my experience that isn’t true but is besides the point. If anyone has any names they like (or hate!) for boys that fit that criteria I would really appreciate hearing them.

Some examples of boys names I like:

Constantine
Gabriel
Augustine
Christian
Leander
Alistair
Ambrose
Dorian
Isidore

What does your DP think? I find with boys names it really helps to have a male opinion on whether something is likely to be teased for being “wet” or “feminine” - although I know any potential teasing wouldn’t be anything like it was 30/40 years ago, especially with softer sounding names that are in the Top 100 now like Gabriel and Rowan.

Other softer sounding (or romantic vibe as I call them) names that I like: Emrys (my fave), Maxim, Laurence (Laurie), Corin/Orin (Ori), Heath, Tristan, Owen, Michael, Elio, Nathaniel, Luca, Matteo (Teo), Orlando, Ivo, Sylvian, Evan/Evander.

My DH just wants to make me happy, I think I could get away with almost anything. Over the years I think there’s only been two or three names he has vetoed but he has a soft, pretty name too.

Love Maxim, Nathanial, Orlando, Tristan, Sylvian for first names and Emrys, Evander, Corbin, Luca etc for middle names. You have great taste!

Peregrine
Merlin

Love more traditional names… also what about some old English? Athelstan, Edmund etc…

Athelstan is really cool, I love it, with my last name it kind of sounds like a really nice nature reserve though!

Edmund makes me think of a bit in a tv show but I can’t remember what. Aghh!

I always enjoy the variety of names when I'm watching the Tour de France. Currently there are a pair of French brothers riding, named Aurélien and Valentin, both of which are just beautiful names. So much of what makes someone like a name is the associations you have with it though. I'd not have guessed that I'd be fond of the names Remco and Wout, but I am!

(If you fancy scrolling through the 2025 Tour list of riders' names, here it is)

Riverswims · 24/07/2025 20:58

I absolutely love these you have no idea, if I didn’t have to (very slightly) compromise with DH I would be using names this out there!

None of those are very feminine OP? Someone else actually suggested JEREMY. Jeremy??? The brief is ‘feminine’!!

Jocelyn was my first thought
Laurence
Nikita

The newest baby I know is called Willoughby. Doesn’t strike me as feminine though!

DistantConstellation · 24/07/2025 21:03

Ah, I love loads of these names but didn't dare!
Stellan isn't frilly but possibly fits in?

Rafferty? (On a par with Orlando I think - quite 'drama school')

I've always liked Florian... might be something to do with a German boy I met on a school exchange who was just absolutely gorgeous...

Came to say Florian. Love, love, love it!

Jeremy is a bit of a wild one, I also saw an Adam somewhere! All suggestions are good though, I love talking about names.

I was saying similar to DH (but I still love them) and he made the point they feel more feminine because they are fairytale or storybook type names. I knew a male Nikita once and he was so lovely.

I don’t even know if feminine is the right word… I just like soft, pretty and delicate names.

Thanks ❤️ Glad your DH is on board, that’s often a big hurdle. Sadly in RL I’m not that brave - so as a SMBC, I asked the opinions of a couple of male relatives re: what names blokes tended to want to have themselves. They sadly only liked very classic ones - the Thomas/James/Matthew type ones (basically any name that several of their friends had, they seemed strangely happy if they shared a name with their mates 🤷‍♀️), so I stuck with my favourite classic name instead of my more unusual picks.

No regrets as I do really love it (and DS himself does too) but I must admit I sometimes wonder about what it would have been like introducing a little Maxim or Emrys instead, especially as people rarely comment on DS’s name positively or negatively (likely as everyone has met several over the years, although strangely at the moment he’s the only one at his primary school!)

Jeremy in a thread of feminine/frilly names is quite funny, especially when this is one of your first associations with the name...

Lots of Irish male names end in “a” or “uh” and can sound feminine to English ears - I absolutely love them:

Eanna
Naoise (nee-shuh)
Iarlaith (ear-la)
Fiachra
Ferdia

ANagsHead · 26/07/2025 11:43

Oh - how d’you pronounce Ferdia, @Op1n1onsPlease?

Looks glorious written down.
