Would you personally use a name everyone hates?

Not sharing the names as I'm more interested in the title question than opinions on the actual names.

Baby girl has been "named" since around 20 weeks, it's a safe classic boring name that makes people go Aww nice 🙂 when you tell them it. I'm now nearing the end of the pregnancy and suddenly woke up the other day hating it! After trawling the internet for hours there is only one other name I like, not only like but have fallen in love with. However the reactions are more God no. Why would you do that? And please don't.
Now it's definitely not a ridiculous name like Princess Twinkle Moon or anything that would hinder them for life. Just more unusual and definitely more disliked.

I sort of plan on waiting until she's born and seeing how I feel (and if I've gone batshit crazy with hormones)

But would you be brave enough?

I fell in love with the name Indiania when I was pregnant with DD1.

Adored it (and still do actually) but it was not well recieved by anyone.

We ended up going with a name I adore even more but if I hadn't found that name I'm not sure what I'd have done?

Pearl? Although that’s fairly popular right now…

I like to think I'm quite sensible in general, I really don't think it's an awful head turning name. It's just commonly referred to as a "stripper" name, definitely not Candy or Sugar, possibly more Roxie or Tiffany.

Well no, don’t call her what’s generally referred to as a stripper name. Why would you do that to her?!

(Crystal??)

I discovered on another thread that pearl is also slang for the clitoris, mercifully I don’t know any Pearls, because it’s not something you can forget..

As a mother of two girls I am calling to your sanity - and hoping that the late pregnancy hormones subside....
It'd be one thing if it was a "marmite" name - some like it, some don't. Like a lot of unisex names started for girls - with boy's names being used for girls...
But a marmite name, or even a "boring" classical name is better than a name that saddles a woman of expectations of low IQ and low class. As if women don't already have enough to fight through with societal expectations.

To chose a name that everybody says WTF - is not brave. It is plain stupid and selfish. Who exactly are you fighting with - the stripper name haters?
Why would you want to saddle your child with stripper name connotations???

An Elisabeth, Mary, Emily will probably finish school with good grades. And they'd not wonder why parents didn't chose more "interesting" names - have not known any teens with traditional names wonder that. However, Troxy and Tiffany would drop out at 16, possibly pregnant. Never met any of those where my kids are at school. People who want their kids do well would not do it to their kids.....

Jade?

dandypandym · 15/07/2025 05:45

Depends on who, how many and why they hated it if I'd mentioned it to ten family and friends and they were all some version of dislike than no I would probably not use it.However if it was just two people and they don"t like it because its something they think is "too weird" than I'd be more likely to use it. Good luck either way.

steppemum · 15/07/2025 06:09

I didn't want boring everyday names for my kids.
I deliberately did not choose any name in the top 100. (although my son's name is now really popular)
But I also chose recognisable real names (no silly spellings or made up words) that they wouldn't spend their lives having to spell out.

There are a huge number of names that are not Emma or Olivia that are also not stripper names or names that cause eye rolls.

Finding a name in the lesser used pile is a great thing to do and is much more likely to get enthusiastic responses from people.

It has been shown that names do effect how people percieve you, you are less likely to get a job interview with a name percieved as being a trashy stripper name. Outrageous as it is, it is the world we live in. It seems unfair to ask your daughter to go up against all of that for the sake of a name.

I would normally say it’s nobody else’s business what you name your child, but if you’re saying it sounds like a ‘stripper name’ then why would you do that? Who wants to be called a stripper name?? 😱

EmotionallyWeird · 16/07/2025 22:18

A name wouldn't exist if nobody liked it. I personally think that unless it's Cubic Zirconia, which is just too long and clunky, you should go for it.

GiraffesAtThePark · 17/07/2025 19:13

You’re crazy to tell people. It’s much easier to announce the name at the birth then people don’t say anything.

I did make the mistake of saying what my son’s name would be if he was a girl, and my mum didn’t like it. I regret doing that as if I have a girl I’ll know she hates that name.

If I really liked the name then I would still use it but it probably would bother me a bit that lots didn’t like it

bellocchild · 17/07/2025 19:40

I would suggest that you try the name with Sir or Dame in front of it - he or she might become Governor of the Bank of England, or an MP. You never know.

SherlockHolmes · 17/07/2025 19:59

Is it Tallulah?

WondererWanderer · 17/07/2025 20:05

If everybody hates it, your kid probably will too. Just give them a decent name.

Lafufufu · 17/07/2025 20:09

If its ezmerelda just dont!

As an fyi most women at some point decide they want to name their child something weird i think its the hormones

Marcipix · 19/01/2026 18:37

I bet it’s Esmeralda.

Shinyandnew1 · 19/01/2026 18:56

@Nameynames I presume you've given birth now? What did you decide to do? Safe or not?!

Giddykiddy · 19/01/2026 20:23

If it's Crystal, Destiny, Candy? Brandy or Sapphire please don't do it -

CurlewKate · 19/01/2026 20:37

It’s not you who has to be brave.

Giraffehaver · 19/01/2026 22:42

I really love the name Cherry but have been told it's a strippers name which has put me off. Go with your heart OP. I'm not brave enough to I don't think, despite dh loving it too
