I used the MN meaning of 'nickname', not the dictionary version.

Yes Mumsnet sometimes seems to confuse the difference between nicknames and diminutives.
James to Jamie
Elizabeth to Liz
Those are diminutives.
James known as Sniffy and Elizabeth known as Bubbles are nicknames.

@Tkoko have you been calling him Roman today?
How does it feel?

Tkoko · 05/07/2025 11:51

I am now really afraid of connotation with Romani people and roma population 😕

Exactly what @Needmorelego posted.

Alex, Sasha etc are diminutives of Alexander, but Sonny or Spike would be a nickname.

No..... Roman/Romeo doesn't have that link.
I was referring to the horrible word "chav".

As a side note, how are you feeling as a new mum? Have you been checked for post partum anxiety? Lots of people can be indecisive about names, but the extent you're worried about it this time (which is a lot) could be linked. Make sure you're looking after yourself.

Roman is a nice name, you're never going to get approval from everyone on one name. Classic names to some are boring, inventive names to some are too weird. That's the great thing about life, variety and different views. And lots of people settle on a name they only like rather than love, due to things like your partner having a completely different style. But you grow to love the because it's your child's name. I hope you manage to settle on something.
