How do you like that?

Meh. Rude slur, absolutely.

Classist, sneering? Absolutely. Borderline racist? No, not in common parlance in 2025.

We will have to agree to disagree on this one.

Gettingbysomehow · 04/07/2025 17:48

Roman is much better. Romeo is very naff.

Tkoko · 04/07/2025 17:56

ScratCat · 04/07/2025 17:26

Both utterly chavvy.

Oh you mean that giving boy a name Roman shows that a family has a bad taste? Oh this is how it is perceived in UK? Well i heard it from Cate Blanchet she gave her son name Roman Dashiel and Ignatius but she doesn’t seem to be that person…but it is good to know though

Are you pregnant @Tkoko ?
I don't like the names. Roman isn't a very attractive name and Romeo is bordering on ridiculous.

@worldso , Clare is a 1970s name.

Edited

Can you please give an example of attractive name?
thanks

I know a lot of Romans and they are all under five. There isn’t anything wrong with it, it is just in the same way that Clare is a name of the 80s I think Roman is roughly 2015- present.

My Roman is almost 19. I know another of 16 too.

So can a poster get their honest opinions across? Surely that’s the point of these threads?

Just like some names are considered ‘posh’ others are considered ‘common’ and it’s useful to know how others perceive a name

Edited

Could you please give examples of posh names? Thank you

@Tkoko if you like Roman then it IS an attractive name to YOU.
Don't worry what others think.
Your baby. Your choice.

Don't worry about if a name is "posh" or "common" because you will never get two people agreeing on which names are and aren't 🙂

Sandmaennchen · 04/07/2025 17:39

Maybe the previous poster’s suggestion of ‘indicative of the parents’ age and socioeconomic background’ is more acceptable to you then?

But ‘chavvy’ is being used as an insult, to be rude and sneering about the name.

Lots of names can be indicative of socioeconomic background. But why is it ‘bad’ if a name is associated more with working-class people? What’s so terrible or ‘dreadful’ about that?

Yes I am trying to understand the criteria… as i am having hard time choosing… bur you are right

Neither.

Sorry but imo "Romeo" is awful and either he will be teased his whole life about being a good lover or everyone will think you are copying the Beckhams.

Not keen on Roman either - to me it’s like calling someone "Parisian" or "Londoner" unless you put the emphasis on the second syllable (but lots of people won’t when they see it).

Sorry but you did ask…

Mattia sounds like a girl's name.

It’s an Italian boys’ name. A more masculine-sounding version is Matteo.

Is it ‘bad’ or indeed ‘terrible’? Did anyone actually imply that?

And even if others find a name terrible, isn’t that what these threads are for? Giving honest opinions?

Romeo should be pronounced Rom-Eh-o.

Give me please an example of the names that don’t have those connotations and that you find much better?

I’m sure you can look up a list of boys' names as easily as I can.

@MadKittenWoman , not in the UK or USA, unless referring to Alfa-Romeo.

My little Romeo is turning 1 tomorrow 🥰 love it

When someone has such a strong opinion on the name it is always interesting to know what is the criteria… I mean if someone understands better what the problems with the name is then he cad definitely suggest a better one… or at least give an example.. I would really appreciate

You seem to be annoyed with me for some reason. If you don’t want other people's opinions, don’t ask for them.
