I’m leaning towards it but worried about lack of nickname potential! Would love to hear thoughts

I've always loved this name (chose it for my first born 30 years ago and adore it still!) Vee or Vivi are sweet shortenings if needed.

KayEmAy · 24/06/2025 16:50

I think it's a really pretty name! and cool!

Children don't shorten names above 2 syllables automatically any more. I think longer names used to be more unusual but now the typical length is 3-4 syllables and kids are unfazed (think of Olivia and Amelia, top 2 for the last 20 years practically and, while they can be shortened, they mostly aren't). Verity will be known as Verity by her friends.

I'm a secondary teacher. I can honestly say children and teens use full names way more than we ever did. The three syllables of Verity wouldn't faze anyone. Parents might want nicknames but that doesn't mean friends will. I've taught several Elizabeths known by their full names, this would have been unheard of in the 80s/90s.

Sorry quote fail!

Everythingwillbeokay · 24/06/2025 22:21

I have one. She is 10. I could totally see her in horn rimmed specs to be fair Grin she is V sometimes, and Etty sometimes, and Verity prob most of the time.

Cheepcheepchirp · 24/06/2025 22:24

Think it’s hideous sorry. I’m not sure why but imagine a very stuck up character.

VerityUnreasonble · 24/06/2025 23:58

Well, I like it.

mathanxiety · 25/06/2025 00:25

Dislike - makes me think 'ferrety'. It's also really twee.

StrangerOnline · 26/06/2025 12:12

I know 2 - one is 20, one is mid/late 30s. Neither have nicknames.
I like it

IsThePopeCatholic · 26/06/2025 12:22

Love it.

Dellaandthedealer · 26/06/2025 12:33

Lovely name, pretty and strong.

Wishimaywishimight · 26/06/2025 12:37

I have never come across such an obsession with nicknames as on MN! Every name suggestion has to be followed by a possible nickname!

Can't you just name your child whatever you like and let any nicknames (which are not compulsory!) fall where they may (or not)?

Btw, Verity is a beautiful name.

WhycantBarryswim · 26/06/2025 13:10

The only Verity i knew was about 35 years ago and she was called Vomity - we were very mature back then!

DumdumSpiroSpero · 26/06/2025 13:22

I had a Verity friend nn Ferrety. We were Pony Club kids in Devon though- I wonder if the nn is more likely in rural than town settings (some of us kept ferrets).
I think it's a charming name and like the Vee version

Cedrabbage · 26/06/2025 15:43

Always hated it. Sounds ratty.

Thisismyalterego · 26/06/2025 20:01

I've always liked it since I was a teenager and read that David Essex had used it for his daughter.
I don't really understand why people feel a need to have a nickname ready to go. In my experience, nicknames , like Christmas traditions, evolve naturally over time and often are more about a characteristic of the person, rather than being an abbreviation of their given name.

LivelyMintViper · 26/06/2025 20:10

My daughter age 11 was attacked "for no reason" by another girl called Verity. My dd had never come across the name before and thought it was "ferrity'. Btw I think it's a lovely name

NW3Lady · 26/06/2025 20:49

I really like it. It’s nicely unusual too. Although I might think twice if my surname began with a D.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 28/06/2025 11:54

I love it

Verity is easy to say so I think it would be especially likely to be shortened, if it were them I think it would be something like Vivi - I really don’t think anyone will try calling her Very, so don’t worry about that.

I have an aversion to virtue names. Verity in particular seems very mimsy.

gattocattivo · 28/06/2025 12:05

pretty name with a lovely meaning. No need to shorten it at all.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 28/06/2025 20:36

I like Verity and its meaning. It's one of those names that everyone has heard of, but it's unusual to meet someone called that!

RogueFemale · 29/06/2025 00:34

I don't like the name Verity. I've nothing against virtue names, just don't think it's one of the pretty ones.
