I’m leaning towards it but worried about lack of nickname potential! Would love to hear thoughts

My first best friend at nursery school was called Verity back in the mid seventies so I’ve always liked it. I like virtue names generally, especially Constance & Prudence. I love Unity, though would never have used it, far too Mitfordian!

The Verity I knew was nicknamed Veg as a teenager. I liked both the name and the nickname.

Squirrelsnut · 24/06/2025 07:55

I like it. For some reason I always partner it in my mind with Meredith.

Lovely name.. have known 3 .., one no nickname, one just V, the other was always called Fizz .. so nothing to do with her name...

my bestie is a Verity, we were at primary together now mid 50s. Sometimes her name is shortened to ‘Vi’. She’s a hoot, and very wise, just a very lovely person all round. It’s a good name.

InfiniteArmyofOctopi · 24/06/2025 08:35

I think it's lovely and I know plenty of three syllable girls and women of all ages who go by the full name - Violet,Vanessa, Sophia, Katherine, Alison...

I hate nicknames so that is a plus for me.

far too strong of an association with the book though. I believe there is also a movie coming out. I would google and make sure you understand the cultural connotations once that happens.

What book?

I love the name Verity, I would shorten it to Vee if necessary.

It’s the name of the main charity group for PCOS if that bothers you at all!

Here's the Verity sculpture in Ilfracombe.

We have a cow called Verity, she's a very nice cow! I think it's a pretty name and Vee is a likely nickname.

Funderthighs · 24/06/2025 10:05

I think it’s lovely!

PilatesPeach · 24/06/2025 10:18

lovely name no need for a nickname

BootballJoy · 24/06/2025 10:22

Not a fan of virtue names, so it's not for me.

Love Verity! Elegant, yet with a slightly quirky feel, along the lines of Felicity - but being shorter and only 3 syllables it probably won’t get a nickname like that often does (I have a 3 syllable name that isnt shortened but I feel the 4+ ones nearly always are). If you really want one, then I’d guess “Vee” occasionally gets used or maybe “Vivi”.

Really love the meaning too, I’m always surprised Verity is so underused - I first saw the the name as a child when I read an Agatha Christie novel (err, she was the victim so maybe don’t read it actually ) and loved it even then. Also surprised at the “Ferrety” thing as it’s not exactly a common adjective so not one I would have thought about - I guess if kids are that determined to tease, they will find anything about a name (I’m guessing therefore most Lucas must get Mucus and Isabelle’s called Is a smell etc but doesn’t seem to have harmed their popularity 🤣).

Hoolahoophop · 24/06/2025 10:44

Love it, one of my favorites.

Could be a Vee or a Tee I know people who go by both and it works.

Love the idea of Ritzy

Spinachpastapicker · 24/06/2025 11:02

I really like it. I know one in her 20’s who is always Verity and doesn’t have a nickname. Some friends tried calling her Vee in her early teens and she shut that down right away. To me it’s a strong name.

TaraRhu · 24/06/2025 11:16

❤️ it

Viviennemary · 24/06/2025 11:18

I like it. But it's quite unusual.

LividVermiciousKnid · 24/06/2025 11:23

I met a Verity in a nightclub once while off my face and went round telling her how much I loved her name (and probably trying to stroke her arm).

I still love the name.

How weird. I know sisters with these names!

HugoYorway · 24/06/2025 11:42

Ferrety

It's a nice name, @PeachesPearsPlums , and doesn't need a diminutive.

MsGoodenough · 24/06/2025 12:23

I absolutely love it! I know a 9yr old Verity who is fab and really suits her name.

MsGoodenough · 24/06/2025 12:25

Children don't shorten names above 2 syllables automatically any more. I think longer names used to be more unusual but now the typical length is 3-4 syllables and kids are unfazed (think of Olivia and Amelia, top 2 for the last 20 years practically and, while they can be shortened, they mostly aren't). Verity will be known as Verity by her friends.

HugoYorway · 24/06/2025 12:34

@MsGoodenough , they probably do. Consider just how much MNers want 'options' and 'nn'.

Colleen Hoover. Psychosexual mystery. Hugely popular in the U.S. Movie with Anne Hathaway and Dakota fanning being released in 2026.

verity is not a name I would touch with a 10 foot pole if I was pregnant right now
