Bramwell, Wilfred, Digby or Atticus (yes I know…)

Aware all of these are a bit/a lot out there. Our elder DS is called Nathaniel and tbh I wish I’d saved his middle name for no 2 (Rowan) but too late now!

Digby (Diggy for short) - dh loves, I’m not sure
Bramwell (Bram) - I love, dh not sure, can anyone think of a good alternative long name that shortens to Bram?!
Atticus (Attie) - we both like but worry about associations to the character post Go Set a Watchman
Wilfred (Wilf but obvs he has the option of Fred if he chooses) - DH loves, I’m not sure and don’t like the Boris Johnson connection

Find boys names so hard! Any views? Alternatives which are unusual but less marmite?

Wilbur is cool. I also like Gilbert but spelt the French way Guilbert so that it is pronounced "Jill-bear" (a bit like Wilbur).

If you like Benjamin but there is one in the family how about Benedict? Nathaniel and Benedict go well together and he can be Ben or Ned for short.

I think you got it right first time....both Nathaniel and Rowan are the nicest of all the names mentioned in the thread.

Why not use Rowan? It's lovely and you can always have the story of wanting to link two brothers in a lovely way. Second names are rarely used anyway.

I like Bramwell/Bram a lot. I think I could grow to like Atticus, but the other two are not really my style, sorry.

What about Jack, OP? @Lelongducanal

The names you've listed make me think of Steptoe and Son. https://www.comedy.co.uk/tv/steptoe_and_son/characters/

My thoughts too 😁

Can’t tell if you’re joking, but Jack has to be THE most overused name. Wasn’t it THE most popular boys name for many years in a row recently? We know loads

CuriousA · 25/06/2025 16:40

I'm not a fan of Digby.
Bram sounds fine on its own, I know 2 - or Abram maybe?
Like Atticus and it isn't overly common where I am. Wilf/Wilfred seems more popular.

@Zebralie

so what if it’s popular? Maybe it’s popular because it’s nice. Kids don’t need unusual names.

NattyFox · 25/06/2025 19:59

I like Robin as the middle name because Nathaniel Rowan and something Robin sound good together.

I think names like Jacob, Jonah, Elijah, Tobias, Isaac go with Nathaniel.

I second using Rowan, I know two brothers the eldests middle name is the youngest’s first name - it has never been an issue

Almahart · 25/06/2025 20:29

You can't rely on your child going along with your chosen nickname, so if you don't like the full version don't call them that. This isn't the actual name obviously, but we thought one of my dcs was Lottie and now she is a teenager she uses Charlotte.

@NattyFox

why do they need to sound good together? For the vast majority of our lives our names are not used in conjunction with our siblings, especially not first and middle names.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 26/06/2025 00:52

Diggory?

Well I suppose they don't have to go but I do find it odd when people have one child called Edward and another called Blaze.

Wilfred or Atticus
