Bramwell, Wilfred, Digby or Atticus (yes I know…)

Aware all of these are a bit/a lot out there. Our elder DS is called Nathaniel and tbh I wish I’d saved his middle name for no 2 (Rowan) but too late now!

Digby (Diggy for short) - dh loves, I’m not sure
Bramwell (Bram) - I love, dh not sure, can anyone think of a good alternative long name that shortens to Bram?!
Atticus (Attie) - we both like but worry about associations to the character post Go Set a Watchman
Wilfred (Wilf but obvs he has the option of Fred if he chooses) - DH loves, I’m not sure and don’t like the Boris Johnson connection

Find boys names so hard! Any views? Alternatives which are unusual but less marmite?

Oh I don't know @TheCountessofLocksley , if someone yelled "Atlas" across a pub (see previous test) I would definitely bat an eyelid!

Bramwell is one of Aldis own brands - at least he'd be able to find products with his name on

I knew I’d seen it somewhere! 😂😂

This can’t be a genuine post surely?

sugarapplelane · 23/06/2025 10:10

Atticus is the best name in your list. I love it.
How about Cassian?

SqueakyDinosaur · 23/06/2025 10:11

What about Diggory instead of Digby? I have a friend with a Gregory and a Diggory and they're both delightful, so I'm prejudiced!

"You dirty old man!"

I always think that Aaaaaaaaroooold is a beautiful name, but for me, it has to be that specific spelling.

Gothamcity · 23/06/2025 10:13

Bramwells is the Aldi cheap versions of stuff like tinned beans, corned beef etc, so that's all I can think of when I see that. 😂

Sayshesheshe · 23/06/2025 10:14

Abraham gives you the option of Abe or Bram

Digby is not a person's name unless you are incredibly posh and his rah mates call him diggers on the rugby pitch.

Wilf was on our list but I hated the boris connection too!

Blueuggboots · 23/06/2025 10:14

I love Atticus and Digby, although I do remember the film Digby, the biggest dog in the world, a film from the 70’s!

ALDI budget brand is Bramwells. Which I'm guessing isn't quite the vibe you're looking for.

Yessss!!! I knew it rang a bell somewhere!

All of his mates get a cool personalised pencil case or t-shirt; and all that poor little Bramwell gets is a bottle of brown sauce!!

whatsyournickname · 23/06/2025 10:16

Bramwell, Digby and Atticus are much more out there than Nathaniel.

If you're actually going for classic but uncommon and a bit cool, I would suggest:

Alistair (Ali)
Zachary (Zac)
Sebastian (Seb)
Julian (Jude)
Caspar (Cass)
Philip (Pip)

I wouldn't use your first son's middle name.

Lelongducanal · 23/06/2025 10:18

This is very interesting! I thought they might raise some strong opinions. Helpful to hear that overly biblical concern is not really a thing, and also good point that none of them ‘go’ with Nathaniel/Nate. Didn’t know about the Aldi/Bramwell connection.

Middle name likely to be Robin or James (family names, I like Robin tbh but dh not keen as first name).

Thanks to all those who made some suggestions, I like:
Isaac
Cassian
Benjamin but used a lot in the family
Still like Atticus but someone made a good point on potential faddiness.

It’s funny that Digby is a dog name to so many ppl - to us the association was dashing fighter pilot 😅

I love Alaric - Although it's not that long but it's still three syllables.

Theodore

Frederick

Cadwallader

Not enough Herbert's around in my opinion. Bert, Bertie or Herb or Herbie.
Or Earnest because I love the importance of being Earnest. Earn, Ernie
Arthur shortened to Art.

We once ate at a (standard chain) pub and there was a horrendously-behaved little Aristotle at the next table.

The behaviour wasn't good anyway; but I don't think it would have seemed quite as irritating if he'd had Jack or Oliver yelled at him by his frazzled parents.

Gettingbysomehow · 23/06/2025 10:21

If they are going to Eton then ok I suppose but if its the local comprehensive then no.

TheCountessofLocksley · 23/06/2025 10:23

@softlyfallsthesnowbut hopefully polite enough to stay quiet 😂

Gymnopediegivesmethewillies · 23/06/2025 10:25

Benedict
Drew (Andrew)
Bastion or Seb (Sebastian)
Nicky (Dominic)

Anotheronelikeit · 23/06/2025 10:25

I rather like more unusual out the ordinary names and whilst you should pick the name that you ultimately want, because there will always be someone who doesn't like it! You have asked for the MN opinion so
Bram sounds fine! but Bramwell is a brand of food Aldi sells (sorry first thing I thought!)
Atticus I like, I've never met anyone with the name but have heard it in Australia, but have no idea what your reference in your OP is so likely not many kids his age will either
Wilfred, I like it's a timeless name and can be altered how he likes when older but you have to be happy he may forever be known as a shortened version of his own choice such as Fred, or Wilf
Digby, might not age well, there was someone on Made in Chelsea with that name once and other than that everyone seems to name it their dog?
Zachary goes nicely with Nathaniel, and again has different variations he/you can call him that are all also nice names

Nathaniel and Abraham feels a bit heavily biblical… but I guess Nate and Bram less so.

Abraham isn't shortened tio Bram. It's Abe.

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 23/06/2025 10:26

I like the name Herbert. I also remember loving the name Humbert, who was the main character in a story book that I had as a child... then, as an adult, I heard of Nabokov and rather went off the name.

MirandaBlu · 23/06/2025 10:26

Abram - or at a stretch even Avram - feels a bit more modern than Abraham. I would consider using just Bram, though.

thecatneuterer · 23/06/2025 10:27

Is Bramwell a name? Branwell is a (weird) name, made famous by the dissolute brother of the Brontë sisters. If I were to hear of a Bramwell I'd assume the parents had vaguely heard of Branwell but had got it wrong.

girljulian · 23/06/2025 10:28

I love Atticus. Wilfred and Digby...nah. Bramwell could be cool but it does make me think of Branwell Bronte, who was a bit of a nutter.
