Bramwell, Wilfred, Digby or Atticus (yes I know…)

Aware all of these are a bit/a lot out there. Our elder DS is called Nathaniel and tbh I wish I’d saved his middle name for no 2 (Rowan) but too late now!

Digby (Diggy for short) - dh loves, I’m not sure
Bramwell (Bram) - I love, dh not sure, can anyone think of a good alternative long name that shortens to Bram?!
Atticus (Attie) - we both like but worry about associations to the character post Go Set a Watchman
Wilfred (Wilf but obvs he has the option of Fred if he chooses) - DH loves, I’m not sure and don’t like the Boris Johnson connection

Find boys names so hard! Any views? Alternatives which are unusual but less marmite?

Isaac is lovely (Zac) but I worry about ott on biblical. We did consider Zachary, maybe should go back on the list.

As has been said, lots of names have biblical origins including Zachary. They're just mainstream names.

I probably shouldn't say this... but... we've had two black cats that were named Wilf and Bram - which was indeed short for Bramwell, not Abraham.

We've also had cats called Hamish, Claude, Archie & Theo. This was years ago, so it's odd to see these names trending for babies now.

Algernon (Algy) will likely be the next popular boys name - that was our previous dog.

😂😂

You seem a bit fixated on finding something with a cutesy nickname.

Nate is going to take your DS1 through life if he wants it to but realistically, Diggy and Attie aren't going to work past the toddler years.

I know people have the 'Prime Minister test' but my favourite test is 'when he's 18 and he's just met someone cute at the pub and has to yell his name out over the music, are either of them going to cringe?'

TISagoodday · 23/06/2025 09:56

Really love Nathaniel-
Also love Wilfred but understand the popularity/Boris conundrum- as pp said Wilbur is a good alternative.
I believe that there was even a Digory in a C.S. Lewis Narnia book- I'm not a massive fan but it's there instead of Digby!!

T1Dmama · 23/06/2025 09:56

Why are people going with such way out ww names these days?
Digby is awful for a child. 100% a dogs name, and in-fact I know of several dogs called digby!
Nathaniel is a reasonably normal name,
the others you mention (except Wilfred) are not.
I would stop using your older
sons middle name to address him and just use that for your pending son.

Yeah, this is my fear - and we are in east London (of course). That’s the reason I liked Nathaniel - classic but not common.

Isaac is lovely (Zac) but I worry about ott on biblical. We did consider Zachary, maybe should go back on the list.

Love Zachary but it didn’t sound right with our surname and sisters dog was called Zach when we were thinking boys names,

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 23/06/2025 09:57

How about Wilfred Bramble?

Yeah this is a good test. I think because Nathaniel gets called ‘Natey’ (he came up with it) I’m aware it happens. But yeah, the email signature/pub intro test is a good one. Plus Nathaniel has Nate or even Nathan as well as perfectly good long version.

Atticus for me is To Kill a Mockingbird which is a true classic. I love it.

I know a couple of Digby’s - one is a lab, one is a spaniel 😆

Bramwell is too try hard. Wilfred is still an old man name for me, flat cap and dirty nails.

ImFineItsAllFine · 23/06/2025 09:58

OP I don't think most people think of Nathaniel as being one of the big 'biblical' names, so I wouldn't worry about that. We're not even slightly religious and both my DC have strong Hebrew names, generally they are the classics in the UK especially for boys.

Digby is really cute on a 3 year old (I know one) but I struggle to picture it on an adult. It definitely doesn't need shortening.

Wilfred is ok but just everywhere right now, I know loads.

Atticus is a bit 'try hard' and doesn't shorten well (Attie is awful, sorry)

I don't love Bram.

Isaac and Zachary are both great!

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 23/06/2025 09:58

Just no.

Apillthatmakesyousayalltherightstuff · 23/06/2025 09:58

Please don't use Bramwell; it's one of my family surnames and you'll clog up my genealogy searches. Thanks. :)

Rigby is nicer than Digby IMHO.

How about Wilfred Bramble?

"You dirty old man!"

"You dirty old man!"

Glad someone spotted it 🥰

HarrietBond · 23/06/2025 10:00

Rigby is Rising Damp.

Sir Digby Jones was an adult Digby.

TheCountessofLocksley · 23/06/2025 10:01

Digby is a dog to me (Digby, the biggest dog in the world) from a film from 1973, so it would raise a little internal smile (as it may with grandparents/older relatives). I prefer Diggory to Digby, but not keen on either.

Bramwell is a TV Dr played by Jenna Redgrave (again something the older family members are likely to be aware of).

Wilfred/Wilf is ok….bit BoJo chic and becoming dated.

Atticus - love this even though it’s is associated so strongly with Harper Lee’s novel. I also like Atlas and Arlo which have a similar feel.

we have very different taste in names, but that doesn’t matter because whatever name you chose will suit your little one and no-one will bat an eye (and if they do, they are rude so ignore) them.

Myfridgeiscool · 23/06/2025 10:03

Nathaniel is cool. Not sure the other suggestions match as they’re a bit more ‘old man’. Isaac is a good match.

Roastiesarethebestbit · 23/06/2025 10:03

Nathaniel is one of my top boy names. I like Nat for short.

I like Benjamin for a brother, but it’s a different vibe to your choices. What about Benedict with Ned for short?

Kitsmummy · 23/06/2025 10:06

ALDI budget brand is Bramwells. Which I'm guessing isn't quite the vibe you're looking for.

sugarapplelane · 23/06/2025 10:07

Go set a watchman is the sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird and it puts Atticus Finch in a less favourable light

Gemstonebeach · 23/06/2025 10:07

What about Christoper nn Kit? To me Nathaniel doesn’t go with the other names you are thinking about. Benedict or Bennett could work? Theodore goes nicely but maybe too popular? Abraham nn Bram does go quite well because they are both biblical.

House0fBamboo · 23/06/2025 10:07

Bramwell is one of Aldis own brands - at least he'd be able to find products with his name on

House0fBamboo · 23/06/2025 10:08

Snap 😂

T1Dmama · 23/06/2025 10:08

Can you or your husband honestly say you’d like to be called any of the names you’ve short listed?
what happened to normal names for kids?
I thought some of the names in my daughters year were bad enough.
celebrities seem to be picking crazy names and everyone is following.

MissedItByThisMuch · 23/06/2025 10:09

I think they’re all fine, there is a huge range of names used these days and kids are way less judgemental than adults. All of those names would fit in perfectly well at their East London school, unlikely to be the most out there in the class.

The whole “it’s a dog’s name” thing is silly - lots of human names are used for dogs - my dog is Louis, I know lots of human Louis. I know an adult Digby and a dog Digby. So what? If you like it use it.

Same with Atticus. I think you can tell from this thread that many people don’t know Go Set a Watchman, let alone read it.

Wilfred is my favourite - Wilf and Nate are so cute together. Also like pp’s suggestions of Hector.
