Kaia or Willa?

Freya2456 · 18/05/2025 23:50

Willa has entered our short list of girl names ( due in 1 week with a surprise !)

Kaia Summer

Willa Summer

Kaia Autumn

Willa Autumn

I think I like Summer better for the middle name but baby will be born in autumn on our side of the world, i obviously also like Autumn and maybe it’s more meaningful to use that but I’m not sure?

Willa Autumn is lovely. Other suggestions as you don’t seem sure?

Maia Autumn
Cleo Autumn
Lucy Autumn
Ava Autumn

Willa is a great name! Fab little book series for kids too. (How special would it be to see your name on a book cover?!)

Willa Autumn is lovely.

Kaia sounds like someone choking to death.

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 19/05/2025 10:37

Of the options, Willa Summer.

Neither first name works with Autumn imo as the an ending/beginning causes it to elide.

PraisebetoGod · 19/05/2025 10:38

Kaia Summer

FrodoBiggins · 19/05/2025 10:38

Kaia Summer sounds like you wanted the feminine version of Keir Starmer

CiaoMeow · 19/05/2025 11:33

Not keen on either. Kaia sounds like a German Shepherd or a Siberian Husky.

ImFineItsAllFine · 19/05/2025 11:54

Kaia Summer is pretty.

I'm not a fan of Willa.

Oddly Kaya (I presume its pronounced the same as Kaia) is the name of my Staffy!

Sal17690 · 19/05/2025 12:04

Sorry I think Willa followed by a middle name that is a common noun is awful. Willa Autumn holiday be something we do this year? Willa Summer dress look best with these sandals?

WWomble · 19/05/2025 12:04

I love the name Willa, Autumn is a more appropriate middle name but I don’t think they combine together well in sound or meaning. More importantly how do the first names sit with your surname and how do the initials sit together?

MiseryIn · 19/05/2025 12:21

I don’t understand why people from other countries use Mumsnet which is a British site, and then get shitty with people who post “British” answers.

So yeah - Willa is awful. Don’t know what the equivalent is on “the opposite side of the world” but don’t do it to your kid.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 19/05/2025 15:35

Not keen on either. Kaia sounds nice but seems a bit celebrity-inspired. I don't like Willa at all. Willow is quite nice though.

Autumn or Summer as a middle name? I don't really like seasonal names, but Autumn is the better of the two.

Kaia Willow would make a nice name.

mathanxiety · 19/05/2025 15:47

Kaia and Willa are both lovely imo.

I'd use Summer as a middle name as the A at the end of both names doesn't flow very well with the Au of Autumn.

I'd choose Kaia if your vibe is modern/ boho/ hippie and Willa if you're more literary/ bluestocking/ pioneer style.

(I don't get 'Kardashian' from Kaia.)

How silly - you could say the same about the very popular name Isabella.

Namechangedforgoodreasons · 19/05/2025 10:12

Sorry but I don’t like any of the four names.

To call an autumn-born child "Summer" seems silly to me. But a first name ending in 'a' and a second name starting with 'a' doesn't flow easily.

"Willa" would get lots of tedious jokes ("Willa bus come soon?" etc.) as well as the "willy" connotations in the UK. It’s not a question of being rude - it’s just what springs to mind. Not many people would call a child Dick or Fanny these days, for similar reasons.

Of the four, Kaia is the best but she will be forever having to tell people how to spell it. I’d advise thinking again. Well, you did ask!

Edited

Isabella....?

Moveoverdarlin · 19/05/2025 15:56

Willa?? Won’t everyone say…

What’s your name?
Willa.
Willa what???

mathanxiety · 19/05/2025 15:57

Freya2456 · 19/05/2025 00:00

Thank you. No idea who that person is 😅🫣

Willa Cather was an American novelist whose life and career spanned the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and was the author of Death Comes to the Archbishop, My Antonia, O Pioneers, The Song of the Lark, and a great many others. She's most famous for her depictions of pioneer life on the prairies. She was something of a literary trailblazer and won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

Moveoverdarlin · 19/05/2025 15:58

Willa Summer? Willa Summer holiday be necessary this year? Willa Summer dress be appropriate for the party? Willa Summer school be running this year?

Sounds odd.

I know quite a few Willas and nobody ever says anything like that to them.

It's quite possible that people in other parts of the world are not as rude as the Brits seem to be.

EmpressaurusKitty · 19/05/2025 10:10

I’ve heard of Willa Cather though I’ve not read any of her books.

The thing is that UK people are going to see Willa & think of willy, which is a child’s term here for penis, & it’s really difficult to look at a name without thinking of your own cultural references. Like I know Burke is used as a girl’s name in some countries but here ‘berk’ is an insult.

All I can think of is starting the thread with a statement in bold that you’re from a certain country & just want to hear from people in that area. It won’t necessarily work but it might help.

Equally, when an OP states clearly that she lives on the other side of the world, why do British people post the silly and highly geographically specific associations they have with a name and predict the child will encounter the same stupidity and rudeness tens of thousands of miles away?

Seems really obtuse to me.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 19/05/2025 16:25

@mathanxiety , how dare you use silly, stupid and rude to describe the perfectly valid opinions of others. Take a long hard look at yourself.

Headycloud · 19/05/2025 16:28

Kaia is very pretty and much stronger and nicer than Wila which is a bit meh and almost not finished.

Kaia Autumn 🍂 😍
