Kaia or Willa?

Freya2456 · 18/05/2025 23:50

Willa has entered our short list of girl names ( due in 1 week with a surprise !)

Kaia Summer

Willa Summer

Kaia Autumn

Willa Autumn

I think I like Summer better for the middle name but baby will be born in autumn on our side of the world, i obviously also like Autumn and maybe it’s more meaningful to use that but I’m not sure?

Kaia Summer flows best.

Don't like Willa.

Enko · 19/05/2025 16:29

Kaia autumn I like Kaia a lot as a name underused and not at all Kardashian as suggested up thread. I m o

HarryVanderspeigle · 19/05/2025 16:53

I like Kaia. Willa feels unfinished. Not really sure why, as there are plenty of two syllable names ending in A. Probably my brain thinks it should be Willow, but a bit is missing. Willow is lovely

Equally, when an OP states clearly that she lives on the other side of the world, why do British people post the silly and highly geographically specific associations they have with a name and predict the child will encounter the same stupidity and rudeness tens of thousands of miles away?

Seems really obtuse to me.

And here I was trying to be polite & constructive.

Oh well.

I will get one of Willa Cather’s books from the library though.

@mathanxiety , how dare you use silly, stupid and rude to describe the perfectly valid opinions of others. Take a long hard look at yourself.

Those opinions were silly, and the behaviour that is seen as normal by some people here in response to names is stupid and rude.

No wonder there is a massive bullying problem in British schools.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 19/05/2025 18:04

I'm guessing that you are not in the UK, @mathanxiety , and your comment about bullying is uncalled for and irrelevant.

Mimilamore · 19/05/2025 18:16

Sorry about the rudeness, ignorance is all around. Willa is most definitely a name and it’s nice, I like it with Autumn but both examples work. I know an Australian man called Kaya ( their spelling) I believe it has a nice meaning? You choose what you like best x

HollieHock · 19/05/2025 18:18

I assume OP is in Australia. They use rather "unusual" names there.

StScholastica · 19/05/2025 20:12

I would struggle with the pronunciation of Kaia.
Willa is more straightforward.

Kaia Summer

Agree

DemBonesDemBones · 19/05/2025 20:17

Willa is a lovely name.

I know quite a few Willas and nobody ever says anything like that to them.

It's quite possible that people in other parts of the world are not as rude as the Brits seem to be.

I wasn’t being rude. I am not familiar with the name and was merely pointing out many IN THE UK may be confused.

If the child is not residing in the UK, I wouldn’t get opinions from a parenting site predominantly used by Brits.

Similarly if someone from another country asked ‘Do you like the name fanny?’ I couldn’t say ‘yes it’s lovely!’ I’d say ‘No it’s what us Brits call our front bottom’. I know it’s a perfectly acceptable name in other countries.

DemBonesDemBones · 19/05/2025 20:20

@MoveoverdarlinI am in the UK and still think it’s a beautiful name.

Agirlandherdog · 19/05/2025 20:45

Kaia is much nicer then Willa. Middle name is harder, I prefer Summer but Autumn is nice too and makes more sense so not much help there.

No, they weren't silly. The OP asked for people's opinions. There’s no point in anyone doing that if all those answering feel obliged to hide their negative opinions, and only be positive. Mumsnet is a British site, so we have to assume the OP knew most of the answers would be from British people.

As I said above, if I asked Americans what they thought of the names Fanny or Dick, I wouldn’t expect them to suppress their real thoughts in case they appeared rude.

K8Davidson · 20/05/2025 23:53

I’ve never heard the name Willa before. Is it pronounced like villa, but starting with a w? Or is it pronounced like while-ah?

Freya2456 · 21/05/2025 07:43

True, and I didn’t really realize how UK based this website is, a lot of the other mums websites I’ve been on have been American or Aussie based, and the results are sooooo different!!

Freya2456 · 21/05/2025 07:45

I actually didn’t know this website was British based lol 😂 my bad!!!! We are so so far away from the uk that me posting on here is pretty pointless, it’s definitely confirmed all my negative associations with people from England now which is sad

Willa is a good, strong, classic name. Lovely!
I would avoid Kaia, because it does sound like one of those celebrity names which will date.
Those middle names are fine.

Freya2456 · 21/05/2025 07:46

Yes in Aussie.

I like Willa Autumn best

(and yes I am in the UK and have heard Willa before and you would have to be stupid to confuse it with Willie!)

I wouldn’t got for Summer if she’s not going to be born then.

Winter is also pretty as a middle name, seeing as it must be almost winter there?

Kaia Winter is nicer

DuchessOfNarcissex · 21/05/2025 07:59

@Freya2456 ,try Google.
